I'm wondering if this system can play PAL format.

  2. I do not have the full spec!!! But
I believe that unit is a UK model and as Pal is used there I should think It would both play and record that format.

I do not have that unit and can not speak to its good or bad points
I do have 6 Liteon standalone'units and 4 Liteon DVD burners in my PC units and all work to my satisfaction.

I think the unit is UK.
If so. Does the unit record in Pal or NTSC [or both]

I like mine so far...No problems. I don't know about the flex recording though, I'm not sure if it has it or not.

I've had one of these for about a month and have used it almost dialy. I've put 100+ hours on the unit pulling stuff off my TiVo. So far, considering the price, features and menu system I'm highly satisfied with it. Video quality is dependant the recording mode and is comperable to anything available in the $100 to $300 range. At less than a hundred bucks it's a genuine bargain IMHO.

As for compatability, there's a readily available hack (Google the name and model. Not sure I'm allowed to post it here.) that renders the unit region free.

I purchased a Lite-on DD A100GX a week ago and have found two problems, one that I fixed and one that still bothers me.

First, when I set up my unit, both the instructions and Lite-On Tech Support (which I called) said that in order to automatically scan for channels on cable, you choose "Cable". That seemed logical, except that choice didn't work. Lite-On Tech Support said to return the unit for exchange/refund as the TV Tuner obviously wasn't working, but when I chose another option, the "HRC" option, the scanning function worked perfectly. So I am not returning the unit for THAT reason.

Second, the picture quality after scanning is not 100%. I also have an old Sharp VCR and a Philips DVD Recorder, and both those units have great picture quality. This Lite-On DD A100GX is not up to those standards. The picture is fuzzy and has rising horizontal distortions that are annoying but not fatal to viewing. These problems occur when viewing through the tuner and when recording through the viewer on any setting, HQ to SLP.

Other than that, the Lite-On DD A100GX is a very good unit. The Timer function is a snap, the unit is VERY small, general setup is a no brainer, so for the price I really can't complain.

I am debating whether to return the unit, but I only use it as a secondary/backup recorder. I use my Philips for recordings that I am going to keep, and the Lite-On was cheap, less than $100.

If any of you know of a better deal, let me know.

The LiteOn is a worldwide unit (only the tuner hardware varies), so the channel setup can work oddly.

Your can tweak the channel on the LiteOn, by +/- points. It makes channels come in more or less clear. This is actually one reason I liked the LiteOn, as few cable providers are broadcasting spot-on the frequency, some are shifted. At least I could do that on the 5001, 5005 and 5104. It's in the setup. Change to the channel you want, then tweak it.
