  1. I hope this is ok for this forum as I'm converting from DV AVI to DiVX/XVid...

Anyway I am following guides to convert some captured AVI footage to DiVX and XVid but halfway through the conversion VirtualDub just stops - the output image just shows the last frame it encoded and the 'time elapsed' and 'time left' counters just keep increasing accordingly in proportion to each other. If I try to abort the program crashes. Is there any obvious reason why this might be happening? I was worried it might mean there was something wrong with my hard disk.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The 'Newbie / General discussions' is a good choice if you are uncertain.

    I'm assuming DV, Type 2?

If you filled out your computer profile, it would be much easier.
RAM size, HD size, OS are all important.

Does VD do the same thing with other format encodes?

If it does it with all encodes, then lack of HD space or bad RAM modules are two possibilities.

If not, maybe something wrong with the file.

Have you checked for errors using VD?

Also check what VD says about the file under 'File Information'.

Try just encoding the video with the audio disabled. Maybe a audio problem.

With nothing else to go on, I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software problem.

  4. Ah, sorry - I decided the original forum because I (wrongly) assumed the 'to DiVX/XVid' was the most important aspect of it... thanks for moving it to the correct forum.

Anyway thanks redwudz too for your reply. My computer is a 1.8ghz Pentium 4 with 512mb RAM and XP.

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the AVI files according to the 'file information'.

I've tried editing and re-encoding the file just as an AVI again, and then as a DIVX file but without the sound. Both worked fine. I guess it is an audio issue then, but I don't really know what I am doing wrong. I used a guide
here[\url] to convert the file and have followed all of the instructions (except I chose the de-interlacing option within the DiVX (and XVid) codecs when I tried it rather than doing it through VirtualDub). I am using LAME MP3 to process the audio. Any ideas what the problem could be?

You could try this: In VD, save out the audio as a WAV. Process this WAV file to MP3 with an external program. I use Audacity (Freeware). Once it's converted, select it within VD as the new audio file. (If you leave VD running with the vid in it, this is easier.) Then encode to XVID or DIVX.

I'm not sure why Baldrick's method isn't working. Maybe a problem with Lame?

  6. Thanks for your reply. I've exported the audio and have converted it to MP3, but I can't work out how to use it with the original video - VirtualDub only seems to let me input WAV files. Am I just missing something really obvious?

Edit:I presume I just needed to install the MP3 version of VirtualDub? Trying it out now...
