  1. What does everyone use to convert PAL to NTSC?
Or the easiest and best program that will do it...
    Thanks!

  2. I hate to do this, but you should browse the guides. There are so many different situations depending on your source. Myself, I use my own scripts in AviSynth to convert. Sometimes it's simple (change the framerate of progressive material), sometimes it's more involved if it is 25i video. I like to use changeFPS or convertFPS (AviSynth), while others may like to remove a frame and change it to 23.976 and 3:2 pulldown it.

Audio is different too. If it is 25i video, you leave it alone. If it is progressive, then use BeSweet's PAL-->NTSC slowdown function.

    Hope that helps.

This is how I convert a PAL AVI file into an NTSC DVD.

First I use Virtualdub to split off the audio as a WAV file (unless the AVI had AC-3 sound but that's another story).

I use TMPGEnc plus (though any MPEG-2 encoder will do) and encode the video to 720x480, 25fps. Then I load the resulting m2v into DGpulldown and check "25fps to 29.97fps."

Works like a charm and I don't even have to do anything to the audio after that.

  4. I'm wondering how big a difference will the different methods yield. For example, if the height of the image isn't critical and there's slack on the top and the bottom, will the result be better if one crops off 48px off the top and the bottom, or if one resizes?

Does TMPEGEnc, by the way, resize the fields individually if you crunch a PAL format DV file to NTSC? I should hope so.
