  2. Are you running other programs while watching your movies?

    I reboot before watching anything.
If it is a clip off the net in say WMV,it will still skip.
But for the most part,if it is an AVI or MPEG say from the internet archive (free domain movies) I download them, reboot, then play. They skip forward and sometimes skip about 30seconds worth.

Play a clip with mplayer2 and then goto file/properties/advanced and see what filters are being used to play it and uninstall the offending program if its associated with it.

Looks like moonlight Odio dekoda codecs might causing the problem with mpg and avi files,i use powerdvd installed and the mpgs i play use its codecs and play normal and the avi are played using divx codecs,as for wmv it might just be bad files.

Ok, Im bumping this back up as Im still having the same problem.
No matter what, video is skipping. No matter what format, on HDD or streaming. No matter what player is being used.

Let me know what specs are needed and I will list them.I dont want to list things that dont help.

Iv kinda learned to deal with it, but it is becoming a real pain having video skip all the time.

Have you tried defragmenting your hard drive? Worth a shot, and you should do it periodically anyway.

  9. Press Alt+Ctl+Del to bring up Task Manager. Switch to the performance tab. When you're computer's not doing anything is the CPU usage near zero? Start playing one of your problem files. How high does the CPU usage go?

  10. Your CPU is marginal for playing video, so any other software running, such as an antivirus or antispyware shield could be the problem. Spyware or virus are also extremely likely if you do a lot of downloading.

Disable Internet connection, go thru Task Manager and ruthlessly eliminate all unneeded software. If you have installed a codec "pack" this could very well be the issue.

Sorry didnt get back so quick, long weekend...
    Anyway,
    I defrag once a month.
I do have many ( 24-28 ) processes at any given time.Mostly what windows needs and my AVAST! as well as ATI stuff.
If I am doing nothing, CPU is at 0-2%
    I only have the needed codecs installed ( divx/xvid - AC-3 filter - one for subtitles )
My RAM is upgraded to 768 as well.

Im not sure what processes I can end since not knowing what few are.

  12. NotSoEasy, I have lots of problems when ffdshow is installed -- even on a 2.8 GHz P4. The only solution I've found is to uninstall ffdshow. If you have it you might try removing it.

Oh, also make sure you have video acceleration fully enabled. Right click on the deskop, select Properties, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshoot. Set Hardware acceleration to Full.

I am assuming I had that at one time, because all I see is a folder C:\Program Files\ffdshow and in that a help folder with:
    compilation html page
    ff css
    ffmpeg-button image
    index html page
    presets html page

Cant see anything in add/remove programs for it.
I am assuming I installed a codec pack and found it to not be so nice, so removed it and maybe this was left behind.

  14. As i stated, turning off extra software, SUCH AS ANTIVIRUS, could well be your problem.

AVAST appears to be your antivirus software. Disable it, then test.

Check CPU usage continously, I'd bet money it spikes WHEN YOU SEE THE VIDEO SKIP. Doesn't matter what the CPU usage is when there is no problem visible. However, playing the video in a small window will reduce throughput and may eliminate the problem. This would be additional evidence as to where the problem lies.
