i've been using vdub to convert .avi's into 29.97 framerate and to rip the audio out of the files for re-encoding. doing this allows the material to stay in sync when converted into mpeg2/ac3, also it allows me to create a common type of file for loading into tmpgenc.
i've had a lot of xvid .avi's work succesfully this way although a lot of them i find have been done in unique and sometimes bizarre framerates/audio samplerates/framesizes. tmpgenc wont open some of these files directly although it will open most directly.
lately i came across 5 .avi's i cannot open in vdub. gspot says (i believe this is what it says) they are m4p2 which i have never heard of. it may be a variation of m4p2 as i may remember incorrectly.
i can play these files in vlc in xp and mplayer in osx.
i ended up converting these files in ffmpegx in osx, however i would prefer to do this type of conversions on the pc, prefferably in vdub if i can find the right codec.
ffmpegx converted the video succesfully but the audio is scratchy and full of pops. 3 of the 5 files i was able to open in vegas and convert the audio that way, but the other two files wont open in vegas.
what type of files am i seeing here, and is it possible to install a codec to use with vdub?
p.s. the files look suprisingly great when i play them. whatever this is (mpeg4?) its really a nice method, i just need to figure out how to take them apart (prefferably on the pc - the mac is busy with other tasks)

do you mean mp42?

try ffdshow. let it decode the mp42 format in the configuration.
