Hi , I have a small digital video camera that records to an SD card, and the format is Mpeg4, now most of my editing apps will not accept this format so i presume that i need to convert it to AVI or similar, i have looked for tutorials but there seem to be loads on how to change anything to mpeg4 but nothing the other way round. I have also tried some video converters and when i convert to AVI i only seem to get the top left hand corner of the picture, but when a friend tries his converter programme he gets the full picture, does anybody know whats happening, i would be gratefull for any input.....

    Thanks In Advance

  2. Please provide more information.

MPEG-4 means about 20 different things, do you mean .mp4 container? (it could also mean DivX, XviD, x264, AAC audio etc. etc....)

Use mediainfo (view=>text) to find out what specific audio & video codecs are being used, and what specific container.

Avidemux can handle most container formats and audio/video codecs. It is an editor with built in filters and also doubles as an encoder.

Hi, thanks for the speedy reply, the camera i have is a sanyo Xacti and it says that it saves in Mpeg4 format, i have tried to run one of the films through video inspector to see what they are all about but it is not supported by the programme , so is there any other way of finding out what they are

    Thanks

  4. I already mentioned it: mediainfo

Avidemux works with Xacti HD1000 (btw is AVC video, AAC audio )

Here is a post outlining a conversion to DVD
    https://forum.videohelp.com/topic348415.html

If you wanted an XviD .avi, just change the steps a bit: the video sidebar should be MPEG-4 ASP (XviD), the audio sidebar MP3, and format AVI. Then press save with extension (e.g. "myfile.avi"). You can also edit with avidemux (e.g. cut out clips etc..)

    Cheers

  6. Sorry, I got the different Sanyo model mixed up, but it doesn't matter, avidemux will work anyway. It's .mp4 container, aac audio and MPEG-4 visual (which is basically XviD)

Avidemux will work natively for simple editing (e.g. cutting clips). You can convert if you want (lose quality) or keep it the same format.

If you are uncomfortable with this or just want to use your other editor, you could convert to a lossless codec in avidemux (such as huffyuv) then edit that with your regular editor - but IMO that's wasting time and HD space

Ok thanks, basically what i wanted to do was to put into a compositing app and add effects keeping the same size for computer of course but if i am going to lose all the quality i am going to have to do this a different way, i think it's a case of buying an expensive digital video camera , don't you....

Thanks Very Much For All Your Help
