  1. Converting DivX clips of 43 minutes using MP3 audio converted to 256k WAV. I'm trying to fit at least 6 clips on a single DVD. I did it before, so I know for sure it can be done. For some reason, I can't seem to make the size change anymore.

    Compressed in 4 different ways:
    352x480, 23fps, CBR 2000 = 733,913 bytes
    720x480, 29fps, CBR 2000 = 733,919 bytes
    720x480, 29fps, CQ 80 = 733,899 bytes
    720x480, 29fps, CQ 90 = 733,899 bytes

For CQ-80 and CQ-90 being 100% identical, I have a feeling TMPGEnc is completely ignoring my settings.

Let me guess . . . Did you have to re-install TMPGenc recently, and you've forgotten to load the unlock templates?

I've been down that road a few times myself, I know what it feels like!

Try to load the unlock templates from the project window, it may give you finer control over your settings . . .

  3. Nah, I can modify the settings by clicking on the label and selecting "Unlock". Besides, CQ percentage is never locked.

  4. Another guess: you are using TMPG 2.59...

And on the System tab you have got MPEG-1 Video-CD selected!

There is bug in some versions of Tmpgenc that appears to ignor many other settings if this is the case

    Nope. "MPEG-2 Program (VBR)"

I'm sure the problem is something stupid. I would say the bit rate is too great, but I can't get it lower than 2000. I don't see how a bit rate of 10 would give a 800mb file, but whenever I try to enter something less than 2000, it brings back 2000 automatically.

  7. I think 2000 is the default for min in DVD template of TMPG. If you try to put the average lower than min - it doesn't work. Firstly you need to change the min.

    You messed up the quotes

It's no surprise that those two are practically identical - the only factors that influence filesize are running time and bitrate, and since both are identical, you would expect the file size to be identical also

I'm sure someone else had this problem quite some time ago here ... can you post screenshots of the CQ settings (press the settings button next to where you set the Rate Control Mode to CQ) - this sticky might help you with the screenshots - for both the CQ 80 and CQ 90 so we can see if we can pick up anything amiss ?

That sounds to me like you're using the wizard ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  10. Got it!

Even though I was trying to enter something less than 2000 bytes, TMPGEnc would revert it back to 2000. I was able to change that value after loading the unlock.mcf file. I thought this file was only to enable the disabled controls, like doing every "Unlock" instead of having us doing them one by one. Apparently it does more. I should have listened to Tao

So, I changed the bitrate to 1800 and was able to put 4.5 hours of clips on my DVD.

Still, thanks for all your help and input. It's appreciated.

Congrats Lyverbe! Glad to see you got that sorted out!

Trust me, I've been down that same road a few times myself!

    Cheers!
