    I was wondering what method(s) or tool(s) people use to detect whether or not a DVD uses forced subtitles.

    First play the file on your DVD player; if you are unable to turn off the subtitles using the subtitle button, the subtitles are forced.

    Take the DVD to your pc, and open Subrip - If Subrip does not find a subtitle stream, you are probably dealing with embedded subtitles (which Subrip can actually rip in its latest versions).
