I have an avi file of 711,892Kb, which I want to make a VCD out of. It plays perfectly in Windows Media Player, with sound.
The first problem is that, when I try to make a VCD using Nero, the file size is way too big for a blank CD (comes out somewhere about 950Mb size).
So, using VirtualDub I cut the avi in half, leaving me two avi files about the 350Mb mark. Both play perfectly in Windows Media Player, with sound.
I make a VCD out of the first half and whilst it plays in my stand-alone DVD player (which works fine on all other DVDs) there is no sound.
Help!
(My other idea was to convert the avi into DVD files using TMPGenc, but once again the end result was too big for a 4.7Gb blank DVD and for some reason TMPGenc wouldn't let me reduced the file size to fit it on, but I guess that's a question for the other forum. I haven't yet tried to make 2 DVDs out of the 2 half avi's - I feel that's losing!)

Use GSpot or AVICodec to identify what type of audio you have. It sounds to me like it's probably AC3 or VBR MP3. If AC3, then you can demux it from the AVI in Virtualdubmod. If creating a DVD you can keep the AC3 as-is. If VBR MP3 and/or you are creating a VCD, then extract to WAV using http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/ExtractAudio.htm .
http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/TMPGEnc1CD.htm can walk you through how to get this to fit 1 CD perfectly.
http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm can talk you through how to get this to fit 1 DVD perfectly. If in doubt, Google it. -
thanks mate.
i actually got somewhere - i stripped the wav file off using VirtualDub and then used TMPGenc to make a new MPEG and then burnt that onto a VCD, which worked.
thanks for the advice anyway - and the links are very useful
