My batch were really scuffed up bad and looked like they were bounced around in the UPS truck for the week they were in route.
As you can see others have had better luck.
I still wonder how all these 4X are still showing up by the millions after TY supposedly stopped making them last year. (?)
I also dont think they are equal to the original TY 4X.
Just my opinion. -

To be totally fair, lordsmurf is correct with his description of my situation. Several of the top discs and several of the bottom discs were throwaways.
Some in the middle were ok. Even though they had really poor scans they appear to play ok on my standalones. (the few I have tried that looked good) Hope they hold the data. But still for serious archiving I would go the extra few bucks for the spindles.
In fact I just bought 200 8X from Rima ($80) with about 175 of these "value" TY-G01's still sitting here.
Good Luck,

I've burned hundreds of these discs and haven't had to throw away any, you must not be very careful getting them out of the shrink wrap. When I was buying Prodiscs on spindles I had to scrap the bottom disc almost every time, sometimes the one on top of it too. These burn fine at 8x, if they don't it's the burner, not the discs. There are 8x NEC scans posted here somewhere from chas0039. https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=257422

I asked about the scans is because some time ago, there was an interesting thread about the scanning process. It showed that there are doubts about what scanning can really tell you and which scans are of value.

trhouse...I agree about scans to a point. That's why in my post I stated "not a scan freak."
I use a Lite-on drive with CD Speed to do quality tests.
I know that single PIF spikes can lead to bad tests results but still have a perfectly playable disc. Also I realize the Lite-on being a ROM drive may not produce the quality to achive better results but Nero CD speed doesn't allow my Plextor 716a to be used.
Still of the scans I have done I can see patterns of differences in the value discs versus the ones I get from Rima. And to my other point about TY dropping the 4X last year and still all you want on every web site has not been explained to me yet. It's just my opinion that I dont think these equal the quality of the original TY G01 4X disc.
samijuba, Eveyone here got a good laugh at your suggestion of my "not being be very careful getting them out of the shrink wrap." They think I am obsessive/compulsive about my media care.
I assure you everything I own from 8mm, reel to reel, 8-track, vinyl, cassette, CD, DVD media are all handled with the utmost professional care and storage. The discs were put on spindles left from early buys from Rima.
I got a bad batch of these "value" discs. It happens. But it wont again.
Enjoyed the discussion, guys. I always appreciate any feedback.

I'm wondering why you don't use Plextools' Q-check PI/PO function to do quality testing with your 716A?

But to the original poster I still say (in my humble opinion) if you want discs for serious long term storage and better quality go for the non-value TYs. $15 more per hundred with confidence is a good deal to me.
Cheers everyone.

Media mail costs the same no matter where you send it, it is billed by weight alone, not destination.

NiteLite,
Here is the explanation about where the TY X4, dvd-r's are coming from. I talked to TY regional headquarters in Illinois this morning. They said one of their biggest distributors is Microboards ( link below ),
http://www.microboards.com/new/
I talked to Jim at Microboards and he said he sells the TY, lacquer finish, dvd-r, X4's to Supermediastore. He says they are genuine and that you are correct, they have been discontinued but there is a lot in the pipeline. -

Why would respected places like Rima-com not sell them? Good question. I may call and ask that one.
Thanks again,

EDIT>> for post below.
That was a quick reply
Much appreciation , trhouse.
I'm trying to imagine how big the werehouse was that contained all the G01's last yr. when TY discontinued them. It is kind of funny and I really dont take it seriously. But I have enjoyed the discussion.

NiteLite,
The link gives their toll free number. You can call and talk to Jim or TY yourself. TY gave me their number. He confirmed what you said about the X4's being no longer made and he did say they will run out. -

I just finished up my first 100-stack of the SuperMediaStore Taiyo-Yuden 4x DVD-Rs ... and by and large, they performed pretty good. Only 3 coasters out of the entire stack ... and 2 of those may have been my fault. Just ordered another 100-stack for $29 today (plus shipping). And, as long as they keep outperforming other DVDs I used beforehand (and until they're no longer available), I'll keep ordering them:

If it ain't broke, I won't fix it. -

A lot of the conventioneers live in PAL country ... so I might make one burner for PAL burns only, keeping the other burner for NTSC burns only. -
