The last one I bought was a megadrive, back in 1991.
Even though I'm 34 with two children there's a rather pathetic part of my life that feels I can't exist without a games machine (well actually, I played medal of honour a couple of years ago and wouldn't mind picking up where I left off).
My question to all you hip youngster's out there is which type to buy?
I'm not worried about the fastest or latest or collest looking, and I propably won't ever buy the latest games (I still play Tomb Raider 3 on the PC) but I guess something to spend a couple of hours on now and gain to kill Nazi's, drive fast the wrong way a San Fran street or beat the shit out of Man Utd using a sub-standard lower division Leeds Utd team would be pretty cool now and again.
I've been lead to believe the X-box is the way to go....
    Thanks,
    Will

    Hello,

    XBOX!!! XBOX!!!! XBOX!!!!!!

Hands down the most versatile of the current generation. If you don't want to wait and buy the more expensive next generation consoles due out at the end of the year the XBOX is the best.

They have an ever growing collection of titles. For shooters HALO and HALO 2 by far rock! HALO 2 is LIVE enabled.

XBOX LIVE requires a broadband connection and a $50 a year subscription but is WELL WORTH IT!!! Great games and fun times on line with the headset.

Also - the XBOX has the built in harddrive and if your into MODDING you can make it do just about anything.

    Great, thanks.
Online gaming and those gore/ganster type games are not for me (is halo a blood and guts thing?) but thanks for the heads up.
If anyone in the UK can advise the cheapest deal, I'd be very grateful.
    Thanks,
    Will

    Hello,

HALO is ANIMATED SCI FI violence. No real blood but blue alien guts....

Plenty of nonshooter games for the xbox. Including FABLE which is an RPG that came out last fall...

    Ah, shit.
I'll take a look at the list.I've been over at miscrosoft UK and all I'm getting is brief information, no specs and more importantly no idea of how this thing connects to the TV, ie. via RF or scart etc.

just ordered an xbox for store pickup tomorrow
for an extra £10 it came with simpsons hitand run and something (I think was called) like gotham racing, but as this took my price over £100 I got a voucher for a £10 so worth the extra!
Now I need to find a cheap medal of honor and something like need for speed.
    A good question for you...
...I wouldn't mind jetting around the sky in an x-wing fighter, or the mill. falcon then off to the surface to swing a light sabre for half an hour or so.
I've played a few SW games but they always seemed a little complex, I think in the main you could call them role play where you needed to put a bit off effort in.
Could you recommend something for me, something I can just aim a laser cannon at and maybe duel with darth vader at the end?
    Thanks,
    Will

i would suggest a playstation 2. the vast majority of good games come out for the playstation 2. the xbox does have slightly better graphics though.

if you're only looking for gameplay, then go with the ps2.

if you want to hack the xbox for mp3's, emulators, movies, etc, then go with the xbox.

i've got both. i rarely "play" the xbox, but i do use it to watch xvid/divx movies and for emulators. all the games i want to play are on my ps2 hard drive.

All I want it for is games, maybe a couple of evenings a weeks, a couple of hours a time when there's frig all on the telly.

Thanks for the games suggestions yoda (hope they're budget titles!)

£99 is about the value I put on these consoles, so whilst I considered a second user system from ebay I think I'll stretch to a new machine (but thanks)

I have an X-box, but my brother has a PS2. I am regretting getting an x-box as i find it really hard to use (might just be me) his ps2 just seemed a lot easier to use with the games he had. I still prefer pc based games as it seems a lot easier to use with a mouse and keyboard.

    Hello,

Will - you won't regret the xbox. And for the best one on one first person star wars action get JEDI KNIGHT JEDI OUTCAST. You'll LOVE IT!!! I have it on the PC and its the best game for Star Wars first person bar none.

    Okay, thanks.
I've just tried to load one of my favourite games; Medal of Honor, Allied Assault and it won't work

    "...unable to load GL subsytem"

Looks like I'll definately be picking up the xbox tomorrow.
I've done a brief ebay search for allied assault and couldn't find it for the xbox, is it not available?

So, yoda has recommended the star wars game, I want MOHAA (in some form), all I need now is a good, budget platform game for me and my wife to play

I must admit the ability to switch to this kind of controller type is a thought that I'll only figure once I try it for a decent length of time.

    I have simpsons hit and run and something called gotham race 2 coming free with it.;
I want a star wars game, sinple shoot em up type thing and then a medal of honour game.
I need a great, enthalling platform game, no more than twenty quid new (probably second user off ebay).
That's all I need really, probably do me for about two years seeing as though the last game I played was two years ago and I still haven't finished it!)

The only good bond game I've found on the xbox is a third person bond game called James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing. I've never finished it because of Halo 2 but it is good. Oh and if you do like first person shooters, yoda and I can't recommend Halo and Halo 2 enough.

I agree, I prefer the PS2 also....dont care much for the xbox since its more work in trying to backup your games, plus since I am into the Final Fantasy games, they are only on the PS2. Won't find any FF games on the Xbox. There hasnt been any interesting games for the Xbox that would make me want to get one, I got enough consoles as it is

  30. Will, if you liked Medal of Honour you should not miss
the opportunity of playing Call of Duty and Return to
    Castle Wolfenstein (both PC).

Believe it or not they both make Medal look sick in terms
    of pure entertainment.

@ Yoda: I'm taking your advice re: Jedi Knight
Outcast as it looks like one of the classic games
    I have missed.

Can anyone suggest any others that I may have
missed? I prefer 1st person shooters like quake II
but not out and out slug fests like Quake III.
