With E3 closing what do you think of the official names for the next Sony portable and the next Nintendo home console?

I think they both are pretty weak.

Wii U makes no sense at all.

    Vita is just kinda lame.

If Nintendo wanted to keep the WII marketing why not just call it WII 2?

As for Vita it sounds a lot like VISTA doesn't it? I don't know how Microsoft feels about that. Lawsuit pending??

I am glad the WII U will support hd over hdmi. However it does not officially say it has a fiber optic out. It says "multi channel pcm over hdmi" and mentions an av multiout. It does not mention a fiber optic jack. Could it do what the xbox 360 does and have some proprietary jack adapter that has a fiber optic jack dongle but no direct port? I would hate to think it doesn't have a fiber optic option.

    ---------------

Also I can't believe the VITA will only be 250.00 for the wifi version. That will be the same price as the 3ds. I would have expected it to be well over 300.00 with the power it has. I still haven't read the full specs on it yet.

    -----------------

I also haven't watched the press conferences yet. I'm gonna try to do that this weekend. They should be interesting.

What do you think about the new consoles from Nintendo and Sony?

Not sure than any game system name ever made much sense.

Few were ever any good: Lynx, Genesis, Playstation, Gamecube

    @lordsmurf - I do see your point.

I wasn't into press releases when the playstation or gamecube came out. So they were kind of "grandfathered" in to my perspective. I wasn't critiquing that stuff back then I just accepted I suppose.

I think Nintendo is playing off of the whole apple "i" craze and going with "u". Not really fond of the name.

When I first heard "Vita", I thought of Vida... as in Vida Guerra ... the girl from Maxim. So, I dislike it a little less

The Vita is launching at a good price point, but it seems to be an upgraded psp, so I think there is some economy of scale going on there.

I think its good Nintendo is trying to get better developer support for the games on the Wii U, but I am not really sold on the tablet controller, I would have to try it first.

I thought some of the games out of E3 looked good, I did like the Kinect Star Wars and the new look of Tomb Raider, but I fear it may be too over simplified control wise.

Are you saying that in a negative or positive light?

I'd say the dual analog sticks alone is the biggest selling point. That was the main thing holding the psp back from being exceptional for its time.

I have a psp but mainly use it for watching converted dvds.

I don't think I'll be buying a vita right away but the knowledge it won't be excessively expensive is good.

I will say the Uncharted vita game looks fantastic for a portable system. I did finally watch at least the sony press conference. Although I did skip through parts I didn't care about. I still have nintendo and microsofts conferences to watch.

I think overall it is positive and I am in definite agreement with you on the analog stick. I have moved on from handheld consoles though. What little i do play, is more or less quick puzzle/arcade style game on my Iphone. Plus I can watch movies/tv shows from it.

I did see the Uncharted demo for the Vita it looked cool and the touchscreen adds another dimension. I have a 360 and don't have a PS3 and Uncharted is one of the games I really wish was on the 360.

Actually Uncharted by itself is reason enough to get a ps3. I have both a 360 and ps3 and certainly Uncharted was a definite highlight of my long gaming life.

What I hope is true abut the portable vita is that the touch screen controls are completely optional. They were trying to say that but it still seemed like you might have to use the touch or tilt features occasionally. As long as it doesn't hinder gameplay I suppose thats ok. But as long as you have the option to go buttons only for 90% or more of the game that would be the best option to me.

  8. When you play Gamecube or Wii 1 games on the Wii U, it will only output either 480i or 480p.
For 1080p HD Gaming on the Wii U, you have to buy a Wii U Game.
In other words, it looks like we're stuck with the GC/Wii emulator named Dolphin, if we wanna play GC and Wii 1 games in HD...
This is a big let down for me, at least, as now I am going to have to pony up some big bucks to build A PC that's powerful enough to handle Dolphin. >_<

Anyway, somehow I totally missed that VITA (Loca?) new PSP system!
I'm gonna do some reading up on it.

I heard that the Next Zelda Game will be for the Wii U, and be fully 3D, and make heavy use of the new Wii U Controller.
You get to play as a futuristic Link, that's riding on the Subway, as he tries to play Super Mario 64 on a DS with a stylus.
I'm only kidding, but hey, you never know...

@joe the dude - is gamecube compatibility confirmed on the WII U? I thought I heard it wasn't gc compatible. Don't know for sure.

FYI the VITA is the official name for the NGP (next generation portable). Whatever you read about the ngp is for the VITA now.

  10. Actually, I haven't come across any concrete info yet on gamecube compatibility with the Wii U.
Does the Wii U even have the proper ports for GC Controllers and/or GC Memory Cards?

Good question. Don't know. I think the box itself seemed to be walled off from the press. Who knows if the ports and stuff are even finalized yet.
