  1. I have a PowerPC Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHZ running under system 10.3.6. When trying to make backups of my DVDs I use:

    Mactheripper-2.6.6 to rip - Full Disc Extraction/RCE Region Off/
    DVD2OneX-1.4.1 to compress User Defined-4.4 GB/Disk Copy/Constant
Roxio Toast-6.0 to burn - using the Data Burn/DVD-ROM(UDF) option

The copied disc will play on most DVD Players but not on my Playstation nor my Xbox. My friend uses a PC along with DVD_Shrink and his copies will play on my Xbox and my Playstation. What am I doing wrong

Well your problem might be you don't have a mod chip for your xbox or the playstation. I didn't see that listed so that would be my guess for now 8) Sorry I thought you were doing backups for those, try a different brand of dvd or make sure what format i.e. -R/+R. your systems may also need to be cleaned (lens) but I'm not sure how old they are...
Also update Toast and if you fell like it update to 10.3.9.

  3. I don't think that the problem is a lack of a modchip or a dirty lens considering the fact that my buddys backup dvds (created with dvd shrink on his Windows PC) work on my xbox and playstation. The other interesting thing is that when I make a direct copy or create a disk image and than burn a copy of his copied DVDs(done with dvd shrink) with Toast -- excluding mactheripper, dvd2onex from the process -- that copy will not work on the xbox or the playstation.

What type of media does your friend use compaired to the media you are using? if it's cheap and not a better brand of media that may be part of the problem...

    two possibilities come to mind...
    1. xbox and ps2 might not play region free discs. I can't test that though, my ps2 is modded and plays everything!
    2. burning in data UDF mode is the right way to go, but make sure there are no stray .DS_STORE files. .DS_STORE files are created by the Mac X Finder and can confuse some DVD players.
that's all I got, hth, good luck!

errr, wait, I just re-read your 2nd post, it sounds like a media problem, or maybe a DVDR+ vs DVDR- issue. ask your friend if you can use one of his blank discs.

Very wierd because all of my backups work on my ps2 and xbox...and the nifty thing about xbox is it has a built in Pal<>NTSC converter! i would try different media or burn at a slower rate.

    Q

Also try making a disc image first with dvdimager then burning it.

  8. Strange enough I have discovered that both my dvd backups and my buddies and the duplicates of my buddies backups all seem to work well on the xbox now but not on the playstation 2. So perhaps it is either the media or the burn speed.

I have noticed that my movies always played better on my xbox than my ps2 8) but as long as they play on my set top player I'm happy..

Try reburning on verbatim or apple disks without labels

Depend on laser age, calibration, type of media, and brand of media ps2s and xboxes can be very picky

  11. some xboxes can only read DVD-R (DVD-ROM). On mac I know of no program that can set the bit-type setting (set DVD+R media to DVD-ROM) so the xbox will play that media. My xbox can read both DVD+R and DVD-R but my brothers I have to set the bit-type setting to DVD-ROM for the DVD+R media with dvdecrypter. Now if all you have is a mac then you need to burn DVD-R media perhaps.

  12. Very Weird

    I run a g4, twin 1.0ghz, osx 10.3.6...

I have successfully backed up over 100 discs which I watch almost exclusively on my PS2...

I use MTR 2.6.6 (generally using 'Movie Only' mode (unless it is a disc with multpile files (such as TV episodes).
I then use DVD2OneX 1.4.1 to compress (Generally 'Movie Only', though I do use 'Disc Copy' for backing up discs with multiple episodes (such as TV episodes) setting the total file size to 4250MB (constant bit rate).

I then will generally use Popcorn to burn the disc, though I have successfully used Toast 6.0 to burn discs.

The finished discs play without fail in my PS2 (which does not have a mod chip)

Real Weird...I would try using Popcorn (if you have it available) to burn the discs. Wish I could be of more help... 8)
