My old drive just burned out so I'm looking to buy a new drive. I haven't been here in awhile, so I'm slightly out of the loop.
Would it be wise to buy a dual layered drive? Do they do anything more than just burn to bigger DVDs? Do they do any less than a simple 4x DVD burner?
thx

I would suggest getting a dual-layer capable drive. Dual-Layer media is quite expensive right now, but the only direction it has to go is down. Also, most drives are dual-layer capable anyway, so I think you'll find you can't save that much money by getting a single-layer 4x drive. I got an NEC-3520a, which is 16x for single layer and up to 4x for dual, for a little more than $50 (US) from Newegg, and I am pretty happy with it.

that's actually the one i was looking at. i have an nec that just died (but i used the SH** out of it!) and i never had issues with it. just need to find someone local who sells it (i'd rather have it soon to clear some HD space).
thanks for the feedback -
I've found Newegg to be really fast at shipping: I receive the order 2 or 3 business days after the order was placed. Then again the weekend is here so it would be a few days before you could get it.

You could also get the Pioneer 109 for 54.00 at newegg.

Yes may as well get a Dual layer, price is around $50 US. I have a benq1620 and recommend it highly.
