I asked this question in the wrong place, but then I remembered this site, which was just the right place for this query.

Hi. I really need some help in converting AVI to WMV. Can you suggest some converters that would help me do this? I'm doing a comparison test for my project, and that would be making same sized RM and WMV for comparison as proof. Now, I've made a 30 Mb RM, which has relatively good quality, and is very presentable. I really need a converter, even if it's only AVI to WMV, that I could tweak the settings of. What I mean is that I can modify the video size, FPS, bitrate, and if possible, the maximum and minimum video bitrate so that I could make it VBR in that aspect. I really am lost with this, basically due to the fact that I've tried oodles of converters from this site, and none of them work as I want them to.

Unlike the RealProducer, which have a lot of identifiable and customizable settings, I haven't found a single WMV converter from AVI that would let you modify its settings so well. Xilisoft's converter can modify, but in that aspect, it only accepts the presets, and do not make you venture on your own, which RP or Easy Real Media Producer allows you to.

I haven't tried Canopus ProCoder yet, mainly because of the fact that my primitive computer (~circa Windows98) cannot stomach it, and does not allow its installation in any way.

AimONE, as a converter, is very well made, but it also lacks the customizable/modifiable settings as many other converters in here, AppzPla.Net

To honestly show you my desperation attempt, I've gathered pretty much everything I could see that could convert:

I do now have: Allok's WMV to AVI... converter, Xilisoft Video Converter, WinAVI Video Converter, #1 Video Converter, Ultra Video Joiner, Smart Video Converter, Aurora Media Workshop, MPEG4 Direct Maker, and Blaze Media Pro.

I could not use Windows Media Encoder because I have a Win98 system, and my RAM could not stomach it.

Aurora Media Workshop can have customizable profiles, though, so if anyone has a template that can make short work about the video size I need, please help. It's still hard to manage, though.

This may be long-winded, but I aim to tell all the things that I know and have done about my problem so that help would be easier to attain, given my circumstances presented.

For those who read through all this, thank you very much. Please do help me in my problem...

I did try this the last time, however, I had codec problems. I know now what my problem was the last time, so I'm trying this again. Thanks for the heads-up. A lot of people were telling me this was great...

EDIT: I tried it again, and now, where there was NOTHING wrong with my codecs, it can only encode in PAL DV AVI. It does no more work than that, so I disregarded it and removed it from my system. Can you give me an alternative, sir?

Please, I really need your help. Is there no other alternative than STOIK? It drastically really didn't work for me. Thank you.

I do hope anyone else who has another idea can help me with this... Thank you.

  3. Crap! I was hoping to catch some good news on this thread. I have the Camopus ProCoder, but it often has problems with WMV files. I have to convert an AVI into WMV for streaming on at 128. I'm going to try the Procoder--we'll see...
