iTunes Now Catalogs and Plays Videos

    12:45 - Tuesday, May 10 2005 ~iPodlounge

As we mentioned below, the new iTunes 4.8 now allows you to play videos downloaded from the iTunes Music Store. What we didn't know until we started mucking around with it is that it also allows you to drag your own QuickTime videos into your iTunes Library, organize them into playlists as you do with your tunes, and play them in the section of the Source pane in which you view album art, in a separate window, or even full-screen; go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and make your choice in the Play Videos drop-down menu, or chose In The Main Window (the album-art pane), then click the new full-screen icon in the bottom-left icon row while your video is playing. Something is definitely afoot...
could the iEntertainment Store be far behind...?

The up side: iTunes now sells select music videos. Movies can't be far behind.

The down side: Upon downloading version 4.8, it is not at all clear how you get these damned things to play. Thanks for the clipping on the Preferences. Also, you cannot, as of now, go to a section where these videos are available for sale. You have to luck onto an album or a single that has a video attached to it. The videos are not in H.264 so the files are kinda big. Videos attached to full length albums are free; those attached to singles jack up the price of the single from 99 cents to $1.98! Videos are not currently in DVD resolution -- at best they are SVCD resolution (but great video clarity as they are in MPEG4 format).

Link to instructions from Apple's website:

    Now, on a speculative note:

With this leading to possible movies being bought in
iEntertainment store, most assuredly the videos will
be mp4 with a DRM flavor. But the question will be then:
will Apple be forced to stop selling or "cripple" iMovie/iDVD,
because as it stands now, you could burn music videos
    purchased through ITMS through iDVD.....

or will we be "forced" into upgrading due to "compatability"
issues to upgrade to a "crippled" iDVD/iMovie?

    remember, its just speculation......

Your speculation may be on the right track, unfortunately.

  5. But you CAN play iMovie movies with chapter markers in the new iTunes. Thats got to be worth something. Right?

  6. So if you loaded a few music videos into a playlist, would the cross-fade feature work for the videos?

I bought the Gorillaz Feel Good Inc single off itunes, even though I had the japanese single already, just to see the movie quality and size. THEY ARENT DRMED! I can convert my gorrillaz shorts to svcd. then make a CD/SVCD thatll play in my dvd player under both audio and SVCD! woohoo!

Yes, I too noticed the music videos arent DRM'd. I bought the video attached to the new Thievery Corporation single.

There used to be an app that let you save iTMS music videos (the ones that stream) but Apple broke that capability a few revisions back. Any news on if we can do that again?
