If you get an error message when opening like file unsupported or can not open or is not supported
or you get an empty(black) video preview window
or the video look wierd in the video preview window like green or purple or pinkTry first to change the directshow codec reader priority settings in TMPGEnc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in and right click on the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader and increase the priority to 2 or to the top of the plugin-list and try reopen the video.
If that does not help be sure that you have installed DivX or XviD or MPG2 or DV Codecs, read here how to identify what codecs you need.
To convert from DV video you may need to install the Panasonic DV Codec.
To convert from DivX/XviD video you have to install a DivX/XviD Codec, you may need both DivX 3.11 and the DivX 4 or 5.
To convert from QuickTime MOV videos you must download the QTReader.vfp and copy it to the TMPGEnc folder.
To convert from MPEG2/SVCD/DVD videos you may need the MPEG2 Plugin or a MPEG2 Codec/Player.
To convert from DivX/XviD with AC3 Audio install the AC3 ACM Decompressor.
To convert from MKV install the matroska / MKV Codec.
To convert from OGM install the OGG Vorbis DirectShow filter/ OGM Codec.

I found the topic above and follow all instruction but none of them work. Is there any other solution? I am trying to convert a vcd .dat file to mpeg2. I have a TV series with 20 VCD's but I only have the above problem with one disk but when I play this VCD disk in any player, it plays fine to the end. Please help

Sounds odd - try extracting the mpg out of the VCD with VCDGear (instead of using the .dat as source).
But why are you reencoding VCD mpeg1 to mpeg2? It will only further degrade the quality...

I did try to extract the .dat file with IsoBuster and save the file with .mpg extension in the hard disk then I reencode from there but I still have the same problem. The reason I convert it to mpeg2 because I try to convert VCD to DVD and I had followed the instruction of this link to encode it http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/convert/tmpgenc/tmpgenc.htm
Like I said I have 20 VCD's to reencode and I only have problem with this disk only. All other disks were encoded fine.

VCD mpg's can be authored stright to DVd without reencoding or doing anything with DVD-Lab & TMPGEnc DVD Author (among other). Much better than reencoding.

Thanks for replying. The VCD's which I was trying to encode to DVD had 2 audio language which I am trying to encode in dual channel in TPMGEnc Plus(left & right in VCD). This is the reason I don't want to author it directly with TMP DVD Author. I also have the TMPGenc Plug-In AC3 in TMPG DVD Author program, I am wondering if it will preserve or separate these 2 audio languages without going through the encoding process.

Ah. TDA wont separate your audio, so you'll have to demux the audio of that mpg and make 2 audio tracks yourself.

I just tried to author the .dat file with TDA and it can make 2 audio tracks, however it still freeze to that point. I am very frustrated now.
