  1. Hi folks,

I have a sony rdr-gx 300 and I have the record and video settings set to 4:3 pan scan. After recording from vcr output to either direct composite in or composite in via a tbc output, the playback from the sony fills the entire screen. However, when I playback on my pc within tmpgenc dvd author to reauthor, there is a black margin on the left side approximately 30 pixels and about 10 pixels at the bottom of the screen. This occurs regardless of the whether the input is direct or is from the tbc. Is this normal? I don't really want to re-encode with tmpgenc plus to resize. Also, how come regardless of the record length setting (hq, sp, etc.) the bit rate is always 9800kbps? Is this just the drawbacks of standalone recorders?

    TIA, Matt

As 4:3 tv's overscan the input signal, this will most likely never be an issue when viewing the video on a regular tv. But if you ever watch them on your pc or get a new widescreen tv it may be. The border is most likely part of the config of the unit when recording in 4:3 mode.

The bit rate issue also appears across several different units, so it appears to just be the way they are configured.
