  1. Hi, I'm using Ligos encoder with settings: 8,500 CBR and motion estimation on 18 out of a possible 20. While the basic DVD looks great, the shots where there is a lot of horizontal motion there are artifacts and extremely poor quality. This was shot with a professional 2/3 chip camera with good lighting. Any thoughts on how I can improve the quality on the motion shots? Thanks.

Also, can I burn a 8X DVD on a Sony 4X drive if I only burn at 1X?

  2. i think the Ligos encoder is crappy, it used to be. Use a different encoder.

Your second question doesnt make sense. If the drive is 4x, thats as fast as you're burning.

  3. You misunderstood my 2nd question. I ordered 8X disc by accident, but my drive is only a 4X drive. In face I only want to burn at 1X. Would the discs work? I don't have them yet or I would try it. Thanks. I'm stuck with the ligos encoder for now.

  4. It sounds like you are seeing interlace comb lines. If you are making a DVD don't deinterlace and just ignore the comb lines on the computer. You won't see them on TV after making a movie DVD. Unless you messed up the field order somewhere along the way.

  5. Thanks...it's not an interlace(no comb effect) issue as the rest of the video looks great, just fast pans. I'm sure it's a setting in the encoder, but I don't want to just start changing settings. Was hoping there was a setting that directly how the encoder encodes high motion scenes.

I think Hexisoft hit the nail on the head - get a better encoder. Or try a multi-pass VBR encode with a higher maximum bitrate. This will allow the encoder to give these motions scenes a little extra space.

As for your burner question - why do you want to write a 1x ? It will probably work, although I can't see why this would be better than a 4x burn.

  7. I was looking into Procoder 2.

I was told by DVD gurus that you get a higher compatibility rate if you burn at 1X, especially when making a disc that will have a glass master made for replication. Sometimes I burn at 2X. But the question, can the drive handle 8X discs even though it's only certified to burn 4X. Thanks.

Yes, it just won't burn at those higher speed. The only reason it wouldn't is if the burner itself doesn't have a suitable write strategy, however if these are name brand disks you should not have a problem. As to whether or not you will get better compatability by burning at 1x - I think that is an urban myth. I have seen no difinitive proof, either from my own burning or from the experiences of others, that burning at a lower speed gives you better compatability than burning good media at the correct speed. I always burn at 4x and never have a problems. Use Nero CD/DVD Speed to test the quality of the burn. If you don't get the same outcome at 1x, 2x and 4x then it is either your media, or your burner.

  9. Thank you for your reply. I did read on another package of 8X discs that your drive would have to have a firmware update. I check for mine, a sony 500ulx and there is no update for 8X. Guess I'll have to see when the discs come in today, I'll post the results so others will know.

Interesting about the burn speed vs. compatibility, two people on the Encore forum are adamant about the 1X when making a master that will be replicated. Thanks again.

Most burners, with good media, burn best at their allotted speed. That is how they are aligned and configured. Crap media might require a slower burn. If you want to produce a master that will not have issues, you write it to DLT and deliver it to the mastering company in that format. Not all will take DVD-R/+Rs for mastering.

  11. Thanks...the 8X discs will not burn at 1X only 2, 2.4 and 4. I agree about the DLT, I purchased the drive on Ebay but never set it up. I was waiting for a client that wants copy protection and plus I've been getting great glass masters from dvd-r's. Thanks again for you time.
