  1. My hand writing is horrible and I heard putting sticky flat labels on the DVDs can mess them up. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as far as labeling my DVDs. I dont have a printer but plan to get one.

    1. Take a calligraphy class
    2. Buy a set of letter stencils and colour them in
    3. Ask a friend with nice handwriting to write on them for you
    4. Look at on of the Brother P-Touch label makers. The labels are very thin and light.

So is my handwriting, but I write on them anyway with Sharpies. Unless you can find someone with better penmanship, you have to live with it.

I'm the only one that looks at mine, so I don't care as long as I can read them. A DVD printer is probably the way to go.

  4. To be on the safe side, avoid sharpies and sticky lables... use a DVD/CD printer or a water based marker.

There is NOTHING wrong with Sharpies...it has even been stated on their website that they know of no problems with using their products on CD or DVD recordables.

  8. You could always buy inkjet printable DVD media. I'm not sure how good it is - if you are unsure, visit lordsmurf's site at www.nomorecoasters.com to find out.

I'll second that and also recommend an Epson R200 printer.

I recently purchased the Epson R200 printer which has the print to disc facility and the quality is excellent and the is very reasonably priced. You don't get any of the problems associated with adhering labels which causes 'wobble' when playing back in your home DVD player.

I use Surething 4 labeler with their own matte labels or Avery 8832 (afterburner) labels.

If there just regular ones, the circular ones shouldn't be an issue. You may experience the wobble from the circular ones if you try and ripp the DVD in a computer DVD player because of the high speeds.

I don't like inkjet printer, personally.
Messy, expensive to maintain, short lifespan, etc.

Lots of problems with ALL inkjet media in past months too. Beware.

Learn to write better. Calligraphy course is an EXCELLENT idea.

They are mostly for friends and their friends, so many different players.

I use the same method as LSchafroth and have never had a problem with Fellowes Matte labels. I have an Epson Stylus Color 600 that has never given me problems except the occassional need to run the cleaning utility a few times in a row.
I like Epson printers alot but I hate the idea that alot, not to say all since I don't know, of their printers require their ink cartridges which have a chip embedded in order to work. I certainly don't like the idea of shelling out $20-$30 for a single cartridge.

I also have been using labels "burlington printworks" for almost 2 years with no problems either, 1000's of disc's, and have had the same problem people have described with my disc's that had no labels so
But i also just went to the R200 (yesteday) and have printed 2 disc's so far and it is SOOOOO much nicer than the label's!!!!!!
But i figured how much i was spending on labels, ink cart's for my HP (and i even refill) and it is gonna be SOOOOOO much CHEAPER and nicer with the R200 & the JLW CIS system!!!!

Check out http://www.inkfix.com and check out their prices. It appears they are updating their product list right now.

I've bought several for my Epson 980. Very cheap and the quality of the cartridges has been great. They worked better then the ones I paid over $30 for at OfficeMax. I think I paid $9.75 here.

Yes, but you need to also buy a camera, notebook or desktop PC, to get the $50.00 rebate.

    PRODISCF01 has had issues.
TAIYO YUDEN too, mostly hub size being wrong, some other anomalies.
RITEK inkjet quality went down the tubes too late last year.

Hopefully by mid/late this year, LightScribe drives and media will become available.

It is my guess that the media will start off priced like InkJet printable media (and even regular media) was, and slowly dip in price.

I saw Lightscribe CD's at best buy not to long ago. US $20.00 for 30 discs.

THIS IS WHAT THE CASIO DOES for $89.00 plus ink

on any surface except injet printable!

  27. I have the Epson R200 and it is great. No problems with any kind of mess for me or any problems with media. In fact I have bought over 600 inkjet printables from shop4tech without problems. They are Sonic brand 8x and I am paying about 32 cents per. I get about 100 DVD full face prints on the same ink. You can't beat that. If you make copies for yourself and you don't want generic looking handwritten or stick on labels, this is the way to go. Unless you look close to your prints, you can't even tell diffrence between original disc and backup

Life is like a pothole, you just have to learn to get around it.

  29. My fear with a sharpie isn't that it won't play-back today or even next year or in 5 years... it would be down the line in 10 or 15 years... (that's why I say "to be on the safe side, don't use them")

There is alcohol in a sharpie and CD manufacturers recommend not using alcohol on a cd... but you are right, no one I know of has had any problems with a sharpie, yet.

I'll stick to my water-based markers, just as good as a sharpie without the worries (but someday I'll get a hardware based disc printer).

The Epson R200 prints on DVDs in Hi Res 14400 DPI and in color for less than $99. Fry's had this printer for $69 a while back :P Epson's software will allow you to print all over the DVD (20mm-119+mm)
