I was trying out a couple of freeware DVD back up program and I think one of them knocked something out of sync with my DVD writer (ATA/ATAPI Dual-winxp).

Basically it no longer recognises DVD discs, CD's & CD Roms are ok, and it does what it should with these, but DVD roms and DVD films wont register, basically the LED will flash on and on until you take the disc out.

System restore didn't help, and everything looks as it should under hardware profile. Pinnacle and Nero demo recognise the drive for what it should be, but its useless if it cant get a blank disc to register.

The drive appears as a DVD-writer under my computer, sometimes even just a cd drive, also it doesn't have a small black rectangle dvd mark on the icon that my DVD rom drive or virtual dirve does, its gone. IF thats makes any sense.

    Any ideas?
    Many thanks.

  2. I had this problem with my PX-708A. It was broke and had to be RMA'd. CDfreaks may have specifics for you particular model...

Thanks for the reply, as it happens I carried on doing a bit of research on this problem, emailed the suppier (MSI) who wern't much help, told me to flash the firmware even though it was built with the most recent.

I flashed anyway and even swapped the drive with my dvdrom to force windows to re-recognise it, but to no avail.

I've assumed the laser for teh dvd part has buggered so I'm getting a NEC 3520a.
