  1. Hi All,

Newbie to video editing here i'm having a problem getting my camcorder to be recognised by my laptop, model HP Compaq 6735s which has Windows Vista Home Premium, I have bought a IEEEE 1394 firewire express card/34 with firewire cable and attached 6 pin to the card and 4 pin to my JVC GR-D24EK DV camcorder. The firewire card shows up ok in my Device Manager as Via OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller, but my laptop is not recognising my camcorder, i have tried different capture software programmes but none recognise my camcorder. I have no software disc for my camcorder as bought 2nd hand.
Does anyone have a solution for me please !!!

    Thanks for looking

get winDV. install it. reboot. turn on the cam, put it in play mode with a tape to capture in it. connect the firewire cable to cam and comp. wait a minute, start winDv. if the firewire port of the camera is working then winDV should find the camera and you will be able to capture the tape. if not try another cable. if it still doesn't work try it on a friends computer firewire setup if you can. otherwise since it's used you may have been sold a cam with a burned out firewire port.

I have read in several forums that users of some early JVC digital cameras have had trouble capturing moving video to a Windows PC system via Firewire. Can you offer any advice?

If you install or re-install Direct X 8.1a whilst the camera is connected this will normally solve such problems.

  4. Hi aedipuss,

Thanks for reply, will give a try and let you know how it goes.

    Hi classfour,

    Thanks for your reply too,

I did see that article and re-installed Direct -X but latest version (i think was 9) and not 8.1a so if aedipuss recommendation does not work will retry with Direct- 8.1a

    Regards

  5. aedipuss,
Tried your suggestion with WinDV but still get error message Device not Found. Will try another cable if i can get hold of one or may ask shop to test cable for me first as cable i bought is brand new, don't have a friend with fire wire setup so can't go there. I don't think firewire port on camcorder is shot as i knew the person i bought it off and they have never used it.

    classfour,

Went back to try and install Direct x 8.1a but my computer says this is not suitable for my operating system?.

    thanks for ideas guys

maybe the shop has a computer with a firewire port you could use to test the cam?

    Hi there,
I have an older JVC camcorder that wasn't recognized, and heard that it might not be recognized by a pc unless the firewire port utilized a Texas Instruments chipset. I got a PCI card with TI chipset and it worked, while the onboard firewire (which was VIA by the way) never did.
Don't know if this is the problem you're having, but saw your post and thought I'd chime in. Hope this isn't bad news - don't know if there's an express card with TI chipset. In fact, I could really use a PCMCIA card with TI chipset myself for an older laptop, but doubt I'll find one.

  8. Hi Leslie80,

thnaks for your reply, i still have not got this working yet, my express card does have a TI chicpset,

The card will provide you with 2 X High Speed Firewire 400 Ports to your laptop. The 34mm express card fits the wider 54mm slots as well as a 34mm express card slot. The cards is built around Texa Instruments TI XIO2200 Chipset. This is a quality 34mm Express Card that truly plug and play. Driver Supported Vista.
thanks for your input though, need all help i can get with this one. Have a good day.
