  1. Ok I have a brand new computer and it was recognising discs fine but just tried to put in empty and full discs that play perfectly well on my laptop and it just keeps saying insert disc?

Checked the device and it says it is working correctly checked device driver and that is up to day...really strange...

It's either dust on the lens or it's kaput.

That drive you have is a Sony/Optiarc drive. Try changing the SATA cable.

If you have to ask instead of just looking up how to do it, I'm not going to hold my breath that you'll be able to do it yourself. You can try budz' suggestion, but I suspect the problem is with the drive itself and if so then changing the cable won't help.

  6. It's a laptop so forget about the SATA cable, laptop drives suck so buy an external USB writer. Just for the hell of it go to Device Manager and uninstall the drive, reboot and see if that helps.

I am not familiar with this drive so if MOVIEGEEK is correct and the computer in question is a laptop, you won't be able to do any of the work yourself for sure to replace the drive or cable. You'll have to either pay for repair or buy an external drive as he suggested.

  8. I have put in disc drives before with a friend helping...just need to know which sockets and such like...I am actually an electrical mechanical engineer and used to build mobile phone base stations for a living for Nokia...LOL...but if you have never done it you are still not going to know how...LOL

It is in a workstation not a laptop...with 4gb ram and 1TB disc space so it should have a sata cable connector...will look into it at the moment using the laptop which is handy but would like to use the workstation as it is quicker than the laptop.

I will try to take out the drivers and see what happens...

Thanks guys for all your help
