Neor Vision Express

I have this friend who has captured DV from his camera via firewire into a computer with a Lite-On dual layer burner. He has used Nero Vision Express all the way and it is a capture/editing-program, that I don't know much about. He has succeeded in burning a DVD +R, but when he tries to read it (from the Lite-on-burner), PowerDVD says something like: "Unknown format" or something like that, WHY IS THAT?
In Nero's own FAQ's a person asks if Nero can convert AVI to another format and aparently it cannot! That seems a bit odd as it along the way in the process seems to convert to MPEG-2 as it should?
I hope, someone out there can answer this!
