  1. AVI file appears to be fine, GSpot tells me I have all the necessary codecs and then some, but when I try to combine 2 AVI files (prior to converting to DVD using DVD2SVCD; it works for me) virtualdub gives me an error message: "error decompressing video frame 0: an unknown error occurred (may be corrupt data). (error code -100). Vdub MP3 freeze actually succeeded in combining the 2 AVIs, but the file wouldn't run in DVD2SVCD. Also, the AVI (uncombined) always locks up Windows Media Player. It's frustrating to have an apparently healthy file that just seems to need a little something...
    Please help! Thanks!

Why do you believe the file is healthy, when all evidence points to the opposite ?

    Vdub gives an error
WMP locks up trying to play it
DVD2SVCD won't play the results when you do force it to join.

It all points to a corrupt file. If the problem is only at the beginning, you may be able to cut that part off and keep going from there.

  3. Every single frame in the file gives the same error message, so I thought that it might be a codec issue. GSpot confirmed that it was not. I see the wisdom of your "just accept the obvious" conclusion, but I suspect that there is a cure for the following reason: I had the same experience with the same file some time ago and gave up on it. I then aquired the same file again, several months later, from a different source, and same problem. If the file is corrupt, then why are others still apparently able to do something with it? If it was indeed useless to the entire planet, why would it still be available? Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm trying to exhaust every possible solution. There must be a way!

  4. If it is Xvid, install the latest version

  5. can you be more specific? Are you talking about a codec? Where can I find it? I went to the xvid site and tried an xvidcore 1.1.0 beta but the install instructions seemed hopelessly complex.

Sounds (pun) to me that the avi's MAY have ac3 audio.

Can you confirm the audio format used in the avi's..?
    No2: We want Information.
    No6: You wont get it!

What you would have gotten from the XviD site is source code. You need to compile it.

Alternatively you can find the latest build already compiled here: http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd.asp?dir=/

  8. Thanks, the Xvid update fixed it. Now I just have to deal with an audio sync problem, but I know what to do (I think).

When I combine two AVI files with virtualdub, the first half of the audio is fine but the second half that I joined has no audio....any ideas??/

  10. Look in vdub file->file information for the properties of the audio. If they are different you must save the audio as wav when append the second file. Then append only the video and reencode the audio in some suitable format (mp3). Then multiplex audio and video again with vdub.
