WinDV is a user interface over DirectShow.
As far as the data transfer to a DV-AVI file goes, there is no DV codec other than the hardware chip in the camcorder. The viewing window probably uses the MS DV decoder.

DV "capturing" isn't capturing at all - it's just file transfer from one device from the other. No codec involved.

  3. That's what i tought, until i found a debate of the best codecs in NLEs.

So much s#it about DV capturing just got me confused.

So... basically what matters most, is the DV codec, used for decode your files in your computer , right ?

Yes, and what codec your NLE is using when saving.

  5. as said, DV uses no codec, but you CAN select between 2 types of AVI: type 2 is normally used.
If I'm correct, then type 1 is separate audio & video.
What I've read is that DV has a 1:5 compression, giving 13Gb an hour. Meaning that complete uncompressed AVI would give a 65Gb file....UGH!

DV Type-1 is combined audio and video. DV Type-2 is redundant audio stream in the captured dv .avi file (either way still only puts one .avi file on your hard drive).
