Hi, it's been a long time since I've been on this forum. I got an Ilo DVD recorder with 80GB drive recently. The thing is wonderful except for a few idiosynchrasies. Is there a fix on the green tint on dark scenes? Are there any hacks or otherwise? It's not just a green tint to me, as flesh tones are always a little "off". I don't know if it's due to the green tint issue or not, but any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

The playback of the machine itself, right? And not of discs it made in other players? The output luminance is a bit whacked.

I had read about the green tint but I hadn't seen it before now. I was playing "ELF" the movie and it is VERY obvious. I just loved this recorder before, but this green issue is a huge problem. It shows up alot if a scene has a character with blonde hair and fair skin tones. It also shows up everywheres in darker scenes as well. Anyone, have an idea how to fix this?
Also if you haven't seen the green tint, rent "ELF" and should see it immediately. -
You can easily temporarily alter the tv settings. Change the tint a bit more red, and hit either contrst or brightness 1 or 2 pegs.
Or better yet ... don't use it as a player. Just a recorder.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

It still does this through the dvd player that is hooked up to the recorder. I have not checked to see if the recording is green when copying a disk but it was green when playing the movie in another dvd player that is connected to the inputs of the dvd recorder. (ILO HD04) Thanks for the suggestions. I hope this can be fixed soon. I never saw this before the last firmware update, it could be coincidence but could the firmware update caused this problem or was it present all along?

Yes, it could be. I saw the 5001 turn a bit "too light" on 1163fw in the 3-hour mode. It also caused jitter, so I dumped that firmware.

The Liteon 5101 has the same green tint problem. (I believe iLO is made by LiteOn) I talked to LiteOn tech support yesterday and they say the green tint problem occurs in 10% of units manufactured in Aug 2004 (I suspect it is more than this number). and they are working on a new firmware update. I tried to RMA my 5101 and no reply back from LiteOn after 3 emails. I don't think they want it back. They suggested I exchange it at the store I bought it to see if the new recorder is any better.
More people have the same problem:

LiteOn has never really lied about stuff like that in the past. They usually own up to errors and do try to fix them. They did that with 5001-5005 flaws that are now gone.

Well that's reassuring. According to LiteOn tech support the chances of getting a 5101 with green shadows is about 1 in 10. I'm on my 3rd 5101 and all of them have this problem, so the odds of that happening is 0.1*0.1*0.1=.001 or 1000:1. They also claim all of the problems reported were from the August 2004 manufacture date. So I went out yesterday and picked up a 5101 made in November 2004. And yes, it has green shadows too, even after the firmware update. As kermit once said, "It's no fun being green".
Now all of this wouldn't matter so much if the last 2-3 dozen movies I made over the past 2 months were ok, but hey .... it looks like some day Ill have to redo them.Even people in daylight will have a yellow jauntice look to them. I'm surprised more poeple haven't discovered this. I have a feeling it affects all 5101's, not just August's run. I guess they've never compared the DVD image to the original signal. Flipping back and forth between the two will show the problem quite clearly. Oh well, I have another 30 days with this unit and hopefully LiteOn will have a nother firmware update out by then. It is a nice recorder otherwise.
