Hello guys. Right of the bet, I am a newbie, trying to do some pretty advanced staff, so please don't get mad at me if I don't get something. Thanks. Here is my problem. I got a few family video tapes from my friend, 'cause he asked me convert them to DVD, but he asked me to filter them. I tried many things, most of them never got finished or the quality came out extremely poor. I tried to use VirtualDub and attempted to follow the convolution 3d guide here, but the quality just wasn't nice. After that I tried using after effects noise reduction setting, but it takes like 4 hours to filter 4 minutes of video on my system, and the final result looks a bit blurry. So, I ask please send some advice on what program to use and with which setting and filters. 'Cause as far as I know the order of the filters also matters. Thank you. This is the first one. Please suggest any filters for it.

Here is the second one. It is very similar to the first one. Oh, and by the way, the film was captured using mjpeg 3, with 20 on the quality scale, the max it can go.

And here is the last one. This one has a black thin line at the top on the left side. Is there any way of getting rid of it, 'cause these kinds of lines appear in numerous places, and I would really like to get rid of them. In addition they can be not only black, but white (silverish) too. Thanks for you help.

    DIGITAL:

The first two have a purple hue and are a bit dark. I would correct the gamma of the image, and then change the hue away from blue some. Then a bit of noise reduction. You can do any of this in TMPG, VirtualDub or AVISYNTH. I prefer TMPG 1st, VirtualDub 2nd, AVISynth never.

The next image, the in-and-out black noise, I would read what FulciLives said here: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=243150

Understand correcting video takes lots of patience and testing. Good luck. Be prepared to accept a product that is "better" than the source, understand 100% perfect commercial studio grade is impossible.

    ANALOG:

The "softness" of the video is directly related to the fact that it came from a home format like VHS, which is not "sharp" like DVD. I would not attempt to "sharpen" this video once the file is digital. If you have a detailer and tried to corect the analog stream, before it is captured digitally, you may be able to salvage some sharpness.

A proc amp would be helpful too. Then you could fix the colors before they ever hit digital.

Horizontal jitter is seen when looking at the edge of a door or doorway; you'll notice that it is not straight. I don't know if there are digital filters that can do a good job with this; there might be. I use a JVC sr-v10u; its TBC/noise reduction electronics do great job removing horizontal jitter. Other stand alone TBCs might correct this though I know the avt-8710 will not. Sorry that I've not been more helpful, but at least you have a little more info. Good luck!

Yeah, good call ... I missed the waviness of straight lines. A JVC is definitely recommended here, or at least try another VCR. The signal is clearly unstable.

Guys, I tried Despot, even with custom setting according to the instructions, and with convolution3d, but the black sparkels were not removed. Any other suggestions, is there no way of fixing this problem? Please give some insight. FulciLives, if you pass by please post something, you are pro in video filtering. Thanks.
