    Hi,

My Pioneer DVR-109 (DVD read / writer) stopped writing last week although it was reading perfectly. I replaced the drive and the new one had the same problem, all writing to DVDs failed. Someone in a newsgroup suggested a clean OS install. I did that last Friday, re-installing Win 2000 Pro. I've done a full 'Update Windows' so it's back to SP4.

After my OS update and installation of Anti-Virus and Firewall, the first thing I tried was my DVD burner -- it worked perfectly and I burnt about 5 or 6 DVDs over the next few days, mainly testing it at different speeds, etc. -- all worked great.

Over the last few days I've been reinstalling software on my PC and not burning DVDs at all. The installed software is as follows:

    1. DotNet Framework 2.0 beta 1 Redistributable.
    2. DotNet Framework 2.0 beta 1 SDK.
    3. Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8.
    4. Shareaza (latest version).
    5. Password Safe.
    6. WS_FTP Pro (FTP program).
    7. MySQL Administrator (though MySQL Server is on a Linux machine).
    8. MySQL Query Browser.

Since installing all this my DVD read writer has stopped writing again, though, as before, it reads fine. [Note: The DVD media I'm writing to has not changed and it is v. high quality.]

The error displayed with, all 5 of the failures, is as follows:

I/O Error Device: My DVD R/W
    ScsiStatus 0x02
    Interpretation: Check Condition
    ...not noting the horrid numbers...
    Interpretation: Invalid Address For Write.

I presume some software I installed has caused a problem. Some version of all the software that was installed had been on the PC before I even bought and installed the DVR-109 in the first place, and so the DVR-109 had been working with it -- though I've installed newer versions of some of it. Here's what was on before:

    1. DotNet Framework 1.1 Redistributable (updated to 2.0 beta 1)
    2. DotNet Framework 1.1 SDK (updated to 2.0 beta 1)
    3. Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8. (Same version)
    4. Shareaza (updated to latest version)
    5. Password Safe (updated to latest version)
    6. WS_FTP Pro (FTP program). (Same version)
    7. MySQL Administrator (updated to latest version).
    8. MySQL Query Browser (updated to latest version).

Can someone advise me as to what may be causing my DVD writing problems please, and how I can resolve the problem.

It you think it is a DotNet problem, how do I resolve the situation as I'd like DotNet to be working (though v.1.1 would be fine) as well as my DVD writer.

    Many thanks,

    MS

  2. I'd try something real simple. From the control panel and Windows device manager, first on the DVD/CD ROM section, right click on the Pioneer drive and uninstall it. Then in the IDE ATA section, right click on the secondary IDE channel and uninstall that too. This is assuming that the Pioneer is installed on the secondary IDE channel.

    Then reboot the computer.

Then from the control panel and the device manager, check and see if the secondary IDE channel is set to DMA.

Check to see if the device manager sees your Pioneer drive.

Then go ahead and burn a DVD.

Good luck and let us know if it works.

If falberni's method doesn't work, you might try MSconfig. It will let you temporarily disable drivers from those programs at startup and you may be able to find which one is causing the problem.

It's not in W2000 but you can download it from these sites. There is also some tutorials listed. Some of them are about XP, but W2000 works the same.

    Hi,

I'm keen to try falberni's method, but need some help.

You suggest uninstalling the secondary IDE channel "assuming that the Pioneer is installed on the secondary IDE channel" but I can't seem to find out for sure which IDE channel has my DVD and CD drives attached to them and which has my 2 hard disks. My best guess is that the primary has my hard disks and the secondary my DVD and CD drives. BUT this is a guess, if it's wrong I disable my hard disks and I've got problems. Neither Device Manager nor MS Info seem to specify which IDE channel is used by which devices, only if they are master or slave (IE. Localtion 0 or 1). How do I find this information out?

Also what will happen when I re-boot? Will the IDE channel be reinstalled straight away, followd by reinstaaling the Pioneer DVR-109?

    Thanks,

    MS

I looked in BIOS and saw the IDE channels displayed. What about the 2nd question about re-installing?

    Thanks.

The Seconday IDE Channel and the DVD rw reinstalled on reboot. The IDE needed to be set back to DMA and rebooted. Once done everything looked fine so I tried burning and had the same failure as before.

I'm going to have a look at MSconfig now.

    Thanks.
