  1. My JLMS 163 is starting to show signs of old age. It doesn't verify DVDs towards the end as well as my Pioneer 106d. It also has a hard time reading some DVDs that my Pioneer doesn't

So should I go out and get a burner to replace it. Then apply some hacked firmware to increase it's rip speed or should I just replace it with another reader? My 106 is about 7-9 months old and right know I don't care about 16x or DL burning.

what would you do and what drive would you get?

I would take it apart and clean the laser.

Ditto - give it a good cleaning. It worked wonders on my old Panny LF-D311. Worked like a new drive after an air hose was judiciously applied to its inner workings

  4. I've heard those JLMS drives just don't last very long, give out in like a year. I'd use the 106 as a reader and get a 108 for writing OR wait for the 109. Of course, if you were looking to go a cheaper route, then just pick up a lite on sohd 167t reader. Just my 2 cents.

  5. If you can see a use for a second burner, go get one. Otherwise save the money and buy a cheap DVD-Rom.

As my old boss used to say...'bad drive...? Time for a new system!'

IF you can get a really good price on a DVD-ROM go with that, otherwise, NEC DL burners can be had for under $70. You could spend a little bit less and go with an older drive for SL burning, but why? Then you can use your old to rip. I'd recommend unlocking the rip speed as well.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

Try to clean it first. What have you got to lose? If not, wait until just after Christmas. You can usually find a good sale on the overstock. I paid $40.00 for my last DVD-ROM, and on Black Friday, I paid $40 for my 16x / DL burner.

Take it apart and clean the laser, then get pissed off when it doesn't work after you go to all the trouble to put it back in the case..... then buy a new one.

  17. I ended up getting a Emprex 16X +- and DL

Might not be worth crap, but I got it for $45 and used a gift certificate. If it burn coasters, I can always return it or keep it as my ripping DVD

    What he said

My LiteOn SOHD-167T has been known to get up to 15.5X on occasion with DVD-Rs - I'd like to see any burners that can do that

    EDIT:

Didn't realise this was an old thread
    If in doubt, Google it.

    It's not an old thread
Just replaced it todat with a Emprex DVDRW 1016IM.
Like I said, I got it for $45 and used a gift certificate to boot. I looked at the comments section and didn't recognise any of the names, so they might not even know what's what....In any case I'll install it some time this week and let y'all know what I think.

  21. Update:

Took out the DVD-ROM and replaced it with the Emprex +DL
Cleaned the laser on the DVD-ROM and put it in my firewire enclosure

Rip speed of the Emprex got up to about 6x after awhile
Rip speed of the ROM in the enclosure was about the same but built up speed faster

  22. Well my DVD-ROM died last night

Put in a DVD/CD the light blinks a couple of times then stops. Try to see the DVD/CD in explorer and it says there's no disc in it

BTW, I think I killed it doing and RPM test on a bitsetted +R it ROM.....The drive was screaming

I'm not happy with the BTC/Emprex, so I'll probably get a NEC since it seems they have the best support for OEM/Hacked firmware
