Toast 6 quitting each time I try and make a DVD

Put this in an older thread about toast, but I think it's getting lost in the shuffle, and I'm getting fustrated and desperate to the point of giving up.

Here's what I wrote:

I didn't want to start a new thread on this since we're already talaking about Taost, but I'm having a great deal of problems burning a DVD as of late.

Both Toast and iDVD just quit, no matter what. I've had the problem before with iDVD, and use Toast more than anything, but now Toast 6 went to shit and will quit each and every time I try and burn a DVD.

It usually quits 1/4th of the way through the encoding process. Soemtimes it even quits on me while I'm looking though the video to choose a button for the main DVD menu.

Anyone have any idea what's up? Because I'm TOTALLY lost.

So, that's my story. Help me before my head explodes.

Try the following, if you haven't already:

1. Repair Permissions.
2. Delete the Roxio Converted Items folder AND the Toast.plist files. Delete the IDVD plist files.
3. Re-install both apps, repairing permissions.
4. create a new user, try running it from the new user account.
5. downgrade to the base Ram you had when you
got the Mac, and try running it with the default RAM.

if after doing none of these steps gets you back on track with Toast or iDVD, then consider the doing the following:

1. Re-install your OS, by wiping the drive and re-installing.

This of course is a last resort, but guaranteed to cure 98%
of what wrong ( the remaining 2% are gonna be hardware.)

I am using the RAM that came with the system(1.25 eMac) and I have another bunch comming in the mial, so it's not that.

Tried to delete it and reinstall it, well, for Toast at least, and still no go. Going to try your other methods.

I'm about to kick my eMac in.

Ok, so I repair permissions, and delete the converted items folder and the plist files.

So, I try and burn one episode on toast to just see if it burns.

It quits on me, again. but this time. Toast is still open.

It quits on me, and I get the quit message, but there it is still open behind the quit message, and ready for another burn.

WTF!!!

Well, I think worst comes to worst I will grab my bro's lacie, transfer the files, and burn it in his place. If it doesn't work there, I''m going to explode.

Sometimes movie files I download from the interent cause problems like yours. I would try another movie file.

Didi you try creating another user on your mac, and then trying Toast?

From what it sounds above, it sounds like either the
movie is suspect, or there is an issue with your Toast install.
If it works fine in a new user account, then you know
your account is suspect.
If it acts bad in the new user account, it is then either
the file or it is your toast install, and you need to re-install.

hmmmmm, I'll give it a shot.

The thing is, it was working fine, no problems, for a few eeks, and then went to shit.

At times, it would even quit on me while I was creating a DVD menu button, before it was even encoding.

I'm going to try and make a new user and burn another file tonight. I'll probably burn something I've already burnt before, and I'll let you guys know what's up.

but in the few weeks it worked, did you:

install a security or system patch?
update a unix library
add/install other third party apps, shareware, etc
install a font
remove a font
remove a plugin
remove a contents folder


any number of things could happen easily to
hose your user account, with minimal effort.
If the account is hosed, then the apps won't run
correctly in that account.

I had the same problem with a video clip i downloaded and tried to burn, i made 5 coasters and thought my computer got screwed up after i installed Panther. I tried a new DVD i just bought and had no problems, it was a bad video clip that was the problem i was burning.

New lesson i learned, burn to DVD-RW first then DVD-R if it worked, you get less coasters this way.

Please xplain - is toast crashing on the same file? and do you have sufficient hard disk space as toast needs to use your harddisk to burn the dvd, and does toast behave badly fullstop or can you create CD-R's? and what version of Toast 6 is it, 6.07? and are all other apps behaving normally - all of this I cannot workout from your posts so far.

Creating a new user might work but

You have a number of other options, if dvd seems to be the problem can u tell me how you are trying to create the dvd in toast, is it via the Video or Data tab?

Re-installing your system etc is bit hasty - also repairing current permissions to default can cause other problems.

Well, it was going fine for awhile then crashed for anything.

I am burning anime, and its an anime that has a lot of episodes. So, I first tried burning episodes in the 100's(like episodes 114 to 17) and I hit a snag.

Then, tired to burn episodes in the 80's, whcih I downloaded at a different time, and still got the same result.

So it's crashing on two different files, and I also tired a totally different anime, whih I had already burned, and got the same quit.

At first, it would quit, and just give me the "blah blah blah quit on you" but NOW I'm getting the quit pop up, but Toast will still be open, and a brand new menu will be in back of the quit pop up as if I just opened the program.

I mean, WTF, lol.

I'm running plain ass Toast 6. Is that bad?

Also: What's the best format I should convert the anime into for burning on a DVD? I tired cleaner, and got shitty quality. Any other options? Can I convert things in Quick Time Pro?

If you notice from his ORIGNAL post, he is also stating problems
with iDVD, which means:

He is having problems with more than one app
He is having problems with output from iDVD to Toast
He is having problems using either app seperately

To me this points very obviously to :

A hosed plist file.
or
A hosed project file
or
A hosed user account
or a hosed install of the app, the OS, or both.

Nothing ever came bad of resetting the plists, other than FIXING
the problems that causes you to pull your hair out, so I question
your statement/logic....

perhaps in the Windows world...but trashing preferences on a mac
has fixed 99% of all behavioral problems since system 7.....

3. Are the files created in iDVD, authored and then burned in Toast,
or are you trying to "author" in Toast 6 by dragging and dropping
clips to the Video tab pane ?

Somewhere the orignal post isn't now matching your last post.
Please CLARIFY what you are trying to accomplish,

burn with Toast, or clips you downloaded that you are trying

I downloaded a cartoon I wanted, edited it, saved it, and burnt it in toast. Works fine, no problems. It was a totally different cartoon from what I was having trouble burning.

I think what it might be, was the way I was saving it in quicktime. The subtitles went off screen, so I cpied a dash onto my clipboard, and in quicktime pro, hit "add' and added it to the bottom of the screen, and saved it as a stand alone movie. It worked before, so I figured it would continue to do so.

I'm going to try some other stuff, see if that works,. But until then, I will burn whatever else I have.

But then again, I have a DVD buring at home as I am at work, and I hope it will be done when I get home, and not giving me the quit pop up.

Again, i question your logic as to why, if you are a mac user
( notice I didn't use quotes), that you would state what you said.
By reading his original post, he points to a SYSTEM, not app
specific instability. System problems are eaily fixed via in most cases
trashing the .plist files. To tell him "Don't do that, it can lead to other
problems", and not CLARIFY what you think the other problems
that would occur from that, leads me to question your logic in that statement.

And yes,
6 posts above yours, he clearly stated he repaired permissions,
and this doesn't fix the problem. Any mac user ( again, no quotes)
knows that running permissions only fixes (r/rw/x) permissions,
but does not fix things like:

1. location of available scratch disc/folder
2. location of assets linked
3. available plug-ins to the app installed
4. available drivers availalbe to the app installed

that is all contained in the .plist file, which in video apps is essential.

So you downloaded the file, and edited them in Quicktime?
How does iDVD ( as stated in your original post) come into play?
And when you edited the files, what did the info say about the files?

Toast relies on Quicktime to Process (encode) the files into "spec"
for a DVD. If it is failing on the encoding process, then problems
to look at are:

1. The codec used to encode the file as a Quicktime movie
during the Export--> Quicktime to Quicktime Movie command.
What codec did you use? What FPS ( frames per Second) rate
is the original source video? Did you try and change it upon export?
I assume all the files are at least NTSC ( 29 fps)?


2. The audio setting used during the
Export--> Quicktime to Quicktime Movie command.
What was the original audio codec used? What was the setting
you used upon export.

An anime that I had downloaded off of usenet recently had
QMaster Audio as the audio codec, and upon
Export--> Quicktime to Quicktime Movie command and switching
the audio to AIFF, it made the audio incompatible with Toast,
and Toast crashed trying to encode and burn the file.
Just an example of what could go wrong.

I'm going to try some other stuff, see if that works,. But until then, I will burn whatever else I have.

But then again, I have a DVD buring at home as I am at work, and I hope it will be done when I get home, and not giving me the quit pop up.

If it has quit when you get home, where we should look at next is
the Info Pane in Quicktime, on the original downloaded file,
and see what was used to encode it. Then look at the info
on the exported movie version and then we can narrow down
the problem.

iDVD came into play because I tired to burn something with it, and that kept quitting also.

But I did some troubleshooting and found out that iDVD quits from time to time.

What I did was get quick time pro, and delete the begining and ending/next episode previews.

For the one cartoon that keeps quitting, I didnt do any of the really technical stuff like determining frames per second and what not, I jusst copied a small puncuation mark, added it to the bottom of the screen using "add" and saved it as an individual movie.

This would add a black or white bar to the bottom, and THAT would get cut off, not the subtitles. It saved as a .mov.

It's worked like a charm before, but then it hit a big snag. I can still wathc them on my mac, I just want to burn them, flie the episodes, and clear some room for more sutff.

I think I'm going to try saving it different ways, and see how it goes.

Could you report the exact codecs (audio/video) of the files (open them in QT, VLC, MPlayer and get info).

Another thing you could do is use yousendit.com and email the link to yourself - then post the link here on the board (for others to try the file).
