  1. Hello to All:

I am a newbie and hope I don't appear totally imcompetent. I am trying to figure out the simplest way to take a DVD from my Tivo home unit, which uses DVD-R format, and author/edit them with my home Computer. Specifically, I want to take a TV show that I recorded with Tivo, then burned to a DVD using the Tivo DVD Burner, and Author/Edit the recording with my home computer. After performing the editing, I would then burn a new DVD with only the pieces of the TV show that I wanted to save. I have tried to figure out if Nero 6 Reloaded would work for this, I was also told to use a Tv Capture card like WinTv Pvr 250 to move the data from the Tivo created DVD to the computer. However, it looks like if I did use the WinTv Capture card I would only be able to Author and not Edit the Data. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

  2. I too am looking for the best way to edit dvd-r's created with a Toshiba RS-TX60 dvd recorder. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any guides or threads speaking directly on point. Hopefully someone will post a reply. Good luck.

  3. Although I haven't tried this, I have heard that DVDRemake can import your TIVO disks.

I regularily take DVD-RWs (recorded on a Liteon and on a Pioneer standalone). There are a number of ways. The best one-program solution for me is TMPGEnc DVD Author- it will take the vobs directly from the disk and you can do limited editing (mostly just cutting commercials).

I actually use TMPGEnc Mpeg Editor or Womble MPEG Wizard to cut commercials since they can cut at the frame level instead of only at I-frames.

If you can create a DVD with your TIVO unit then you do NOT want to use a capture card. That would do nothing but reduce the quality. It's much faster, and better, to extract the mpeg's from the TIVO created DVD to edit and reauthor them.

With my Liteon (5101), TMPG will not open the disk- not sure why. But DVD Decrypter will open the disk and correct whatever is causing it to not open with TMPGEnc. So I use Decrypter to copy the disk to my HD, then open those files with TMPGEnc.

  5. Thanks for the replies. I have found a product, the HP DVD Movie Writer dc5000 ($199), that appears to do all that I need to and more. I should be recieving the new unit tomorrow. I will post and let you all know how it works out.

    Thanks!!

  6. I hate to say it but you should have saved yourself some money and followed Bobk's advice. I used Tmpgenc Dvd Author to cut out unwanted commercials from a tivo dvd-rw. It was very easy and the great thing was it got rid of the terrible, horrible, dispicable Tivo Disc Menu and allowed me to create a thumnailed Menu. It also allowed me to have the dvd start immediately without defaulting to the aforementioned clumsy Tivo Disc Menu. I found this helpful given that most of my recorded dvd's are for my six year old who isn't pleased with complicated menus or commercials spoiling his cartoons.
