    Hi

I've just read the description of DVD Rebuilder, namely:

DVDRebuilder is an one click DVD backup tool that uses CinemaCraft Encoder Basic/SP or QuEnc or ReJig transcoder engine. DVDRebuilder helps you to do a full dvd backup(movie, extras, menus) of your DVD9s to one DVDR using the best video encoder available, CinemaCraft Encoder.
Does this mean it IS better than either 'Shrink' or 'Decrypter'? Quality is my main concern you see...

Can you strip out the parts you don't want as in 'Shrink' for example?

    Thanks guys

    Hello,

I ONLY use shrink! It's great quality. Why use anything else????

Also remember dvd decrypter only strips out the css - it doesn't transcode so if its a dvd 9 you can't squeeze it to a dvdr with it (though excellent if you have a dl drive from what I understand).

Stick with shrink - easy and free - hard to beat that combo

Looking at the user comments, virtually everyone says it beats 'Shrink' although it can take a lot longer to do it's stuff...

So, IS it better or not???

(Thanks for the correction regarding 'Decrypter' )

It depends. By better, you must mean better video quality, not ease of use. Shrink is by far easier to use. From what I have read, most people only notice a quality difference when they compress beyond 70%, then rebuilder and cce is supposed to be better. I have only used rebuilder once and didn't see any difference at 60% compression, but then I only have a 21 inch tv. I imagine with a larger tv I would see a difference, but rebuilder is not easy to use and with cce it is not free.

I use dvdrb for any backups between 80%-95%..For backups above 95% i use clonedvd. Anything less than 80% i backup to 2 dvd-r's. There isn't much use in having dvd backups with the quality of a vcr tape. That kind of negates the whole idea of dvd backup. It's a personal choice.I'm sure dvd shrink does quality backups to a certain point of compression.
I have a 50" widescreen tv,so low quality backups tend to show all their imperfections.

I've been using dvdrebuilder lately and I do notice the difference. I made a copy of brotherhood of the wolf with dvdshrink and man is it awful even on a 24 inch tv. Even the menu is blocky. The dvd was around 8. something gigs so close to 9 gigs. Then I made a copy of Jason X which is almost around the same size using a 6 pass encode with dvdrebuilder and it looks sooo much better. It took 414 mins to do the 6 pass on jason X, it took 399 mins to do a 5 pass on the bourne supremacy ,and it took 368 mins to do a 4 pass on spiderman 2. This was done on an amd 64 3000+ processor with 1024kb of ram. When I use dvdshrink it only takes me around 20 mins to shrink a dvd.

Do you notice much quality differnce with more passes? It obviously takes longer. And if your shrink only takes 20 minutes, I wonder if you are using deep analysis and error correction.

  9. I thought I heard you get very little past 2 passes.

Also I use Clonedvd2 to rip and use the movie only mode and cut out last chapter credits and use DL setting so no transcoding occurs then I use rebuilder on it. No problems.

I did a 70% comparison on Shrink and Rebuilder/cce .67 and I thought Rebuilder was better. Not night and day better, but yet subtly noticeably better.

  10. To also save time with DVDRebuilder you might want to try the 1-pass mode. The size estimation is pretty good and it'll take less then an hour to do on a decent computer.

I could tell the difference between the 4 pass of spiderman 2 and the 5 pass of the bourne supremacy. In some scenes during spiderman 2 where it was night the sky had a few black washed out looking pixels. In the bourne supremacy I didn't notice hardly any pixelation effects. If you got a fairly fast cpu and you really care about the film, then use dvdrebuilder. If you don't care that much about quality or the movie just needs to be shrunk a little bit then dvdshrink is good also. I made a copy of the divimax series 25th anniversary of Halloween and to my surprise it only needed to be shrunk 120 megs to fit to a dvd5 so I used dvdshrink.

I backed up BS without any compression. I had to cut out the last chapter which was credits and no menu.

  13. I have given up on DVD RB. I've tried three different times and I still can't find the dll needed or the comb filter that is necessary. Guess I'll just stick with Shrink. Thought I would try it and see if it was better than Shrink or DVDClone2.

he only wanted better - not best , which is better than the best way if you have a better way of doing it with a better product, best to use, that is, vs. better than not a best product better used as a worse product not used better.

i use dvd rebuilder to backup my favorite movies....in my opinion it has better video quality than dvd shrink.......again that's in my eyes....there is NO BEST PROGRAM....use what works for you and what satisfies your video taste.....takes me a little over 2 hours when i use dvd rebuilder on my pent 4 3.0 ghz chip pc.....the process may take long but in the end the video quality is well worth it.

As I understand it, DVDRB uses CCE to re-encode, and re-encodes should, in theory, give better results than transcodes (all things being equal) AFAIK.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  22. Beyond 80% I use DVDRB,
i just start it when I go to bed. Yes, the quality is better than Shrink!

Well, all people telling DVD rebuilder is better using CCE.
How about when equal to DVDshrink (mean free) using Qenc for example?
    Anyone!

CCE has a free trial that you can use with DVD REBUILDER....just need to use ECLECC with it....

  25. Well, this is going to go against popular thinking. I too wanted to try rb because of cce encoding. I finally acquired all the pieces, and tested against shrink. I used the movie Road Trip, the scene where the boys are in the car, jumping the bridge. I wanted a scene with action/movement. I took a screen capture of the exact same frame after using rb and shrink at 85% and the original, uncompressed (100%). I put all three files in a separate directory and used a picture viewer, VuePrint. In VuePrint you can hit the space bar and load the next picture, toggling between all three pics. The one from shrink and the original were indistinquishable. The one from rb had slight softening/distortion in certain areas, very slight but noticable. I did this on another scene with same results. I hate to admit it, but dvd shrink was better than rb at 85% compression. BTW, I used deep analysis with shrink.

Captain315, there is an installer that will install all the dlls for you. You only have to install cce. I had the same problem.

  28. Thought I saw on the DVDrebuilder site that they don't recommend it if you are only doing a little compression, and that DVDshrink would be the better choice in that case.
But not sure where that cutoff is. I would guess 80%.

But if you were to shrink something to 50-60% I bet you would see a big difference from dvdrebuilder.

fscrocco, compressed domain transcoders do not compress all frames equally, and in fact many frames will be left completely untouched. Try comparing several video clips instead, or at least use a larger selection of stills.

If you use a decent amount of compression, I think any kind of re-encode will look alot better then any kind of transcode.

  30. That DVDRebuilder installer which adds all the dlls you need (install avisyth first) is here on this page 2nd one down.
