I have several .avi files that I'm joining into one. But in the resulting file, the transitions between the files are too abrupt. I would like to add add a fade-out effect in between files to make this transition smoother. Is there a way to do this in Virtualdub via a filter or can someone perhaps suggest another application. I can do this easily enough in some of my dvd authoring softwares, but I am keeping the resulting joined file in .avi format and will not ever be converting them to DVD. Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

I don't believe that's possible in VirtualDub. The good news is that there are some free tools in the "Avanced Video Editors" category (Wax2, Zwei-Stein) that may / should do the job...
Good luck. There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

No problem, and please do report back - these aren't that widely used (that I've seen) and it'll be useful feedback...

You could cut the start and end off then crossfade with AVISynt. Re-encode with VDub to original specs, then re-join everything.
