  1. I was reading the tutorials and I'm still sorta confused. Im downloading shrek.avi off of Morpheus. However in the tutorial it says to burn em in a .mpg format. Which program should I use to convert? And I dont think this whole movie will fit on 1 cd. What do I do if it takes up 2 cds? No flaming plz.

  2. use tmpgenc to convert the avi to mpg and then burn it with Nero. if the mpg file too big then split into with tmpgenc.

Look in the TOOLS section on the left
If you use Nero burning sofware 5.5,it got a built-in encoder

  5. Im really new at this also. Ive got one question about Nero. Mike416 are you saying that if I have an avi file and i want to use Nero 5.5 to burn it to a VCD then I dont have to convert it to MPEG1, that Nero converts it for you in the burn process???? Just wondering.

    Thanks Boxingjunkie

BOXINGJUNKIE,yes,Nero will encode your file before it burns it to cd. But you'd try different encoder until you found your favorite. TMPEG is very powerfull and have a lot of usefull tools for splitting files etc. I myself not very fond of it because the files it produces kindof "uncompatible" with my standalone vcd player (no problem on the dvd player though"
I use LSX from Lygos or Xing from Xingtech and do my splitting & joining with vcd cutter. Just be patient and read a lot from the "how to" section on the left. You'll get the hang of it in no time

  8. for mike,
Do all d/l movies come as .avi? Do any come d/l already mpeg? so i don't have to worry about
converting? Also Nero 5.5.0 i tried to burn Fight Club .avi, but would not convert it because of coding
problem. Don't know why, HELP please, your best encoder please it what?

  9. How I get to to d/l in mpeg format? I have realaudio, divx, mediaplay, thank you

  10. to answer questions. Most d/l movies come in Divx (avi) format because it is much smaller to download. If they were in MPEG format each movie would be about 1.2 gigs...almost twice the size. I'm guessing the reason you are getting that error is that there is a slight problem with the divx film you d/led and the Nero encoder isn't sophisticated enough to handle it. I would HIGHLY recommend that you try TMPGenc. I think it is the best, most versatile encoder around for VCDs. Encoding really isnt that big a deal once you get the hang of it and it is very satisfying. Give it a try you won't be sorry.

From reading your other messages it looks like to have to seperate the sound and video, how
this possible, if you only get one shot on CDRs? But i have to say your messages are the
best I have come across since im new to this

Macros746,I don't see how .avi can be smaller than .mpeg. I never download movie but I capture alot of home video/dvd to be transfered to vcd. I use Broadway card which can capture either .avi or .mpeg and with the same frame size (352x240) avi:60 minutes=4GB,mpeg:60 minutes=600MB

I too run Nero 5.5. I've tried the AVI to MPG conversion within Nero without any success on my particular DVD player. Not only that but it is definately not as powerful as TMPGenc. What works for me is first convert using TMPGenc then burn using Nero. If the original AVI is the full length (as many DIVX rips are), I will use TMPGenc to split the resulting MPG file into sizes that will fit onto CDs. This means usually 2 files, but sometimes 3, depending on the length of the original movie.

I'm also with Mike416. There's no way a converted MPG file could be smaller than the original AVI if you leave the settings the same. Yes you could do it with Virtualdub and reduse the frame rate. But the quality of your resulting file would be terrible. My advice - don't sacrifice quality just to get it to fit on a CD. Instead, use multiple CDs. They're cheap.

  16. There's a difference between raw data AVI files and DivX AVI files. Raw data is video in its purest form... and can be several Gigs for a few minutes. DivX is a compression method that reduces the audio and video to the point where a two hour movie can be squeezed into 600 Meg file. Hense being smaller than a VCD compatable MPG file. Both are still AVI files... one is compressed, one is not. Both will end up with a MPG of the same size if you make it VCD compliant, because VCD MPGs work to be 10 Megs/minute approximately.

  19. Ok I downloaded the Avis and tmpgenc. When I opened tmpgenc and tried to put the first .avi file in there it said that it was unsupported or something. Anybody know what I did wrong?
