problems: mpg -> avi

i try to convert mpg to avi using virtualdub.
there are no problems when i select "uncompressed" but when i select the divx-compression like the discription on this site nothing happens. i get a very small avi-file which isn't able to start and that's it. no input or output is displayed. hope you can help me.

You're trying to convert MPG to AVI ain't you?
I think you first have to save the mpeg to plain (raw) avi first, use any (good) codec for it or your harddisk will get full very fast.
After then, open the just saved avi and convert it to divX.

I tried this but I get the same result. any other suggestion?
