  1. A customer at my internet cafe had a recent complaint towards a vhs-dvd transfer I had done for him. He's sending these dvd's to casting agents, tv studios and the like and he complained that the DVD's did not look "professional" enough. He was mostly referring to the appearance of the dye on the bottom of the disc. His footage did not cover the enitre space of the disc thus there exists a ring at about the halfway mark. Although I had never heard of it, he insists that there are brands of blank dvd's that will not create this effect. I am fairly certain about my position, but thought I would check on this forum just in case. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. You could fill it with Dummy files,so there would be no ring.

  3. I thought there might be some way to do that but do not know how. But I don't think that would matter to my customer since he was complaining about the purple color in general. How would I go about filling it with dummy files?

I had on customer who was like this. I redid his dvd's and added another silent video/audio track of a black screen and no audio. I reauthored his DVD with another Track in TMPGEncDVDAuthor. Then I didn't have any track listing on the menu's.

  5. He must be thinking of silver cd-rs. Even those have this effect if you look carefully.

    Are the discs otherwise professional-looking?

    Inkjet printed?

    Sounds like a... typical actor.

I would worry more about the VHS transfers not looking professional than the dye ring. I am not knocking your transfer skills, but VHS as a medium on the whole. VHS looks unprofessional. Your client really should get a better camera. I think video quality says a lot more about professionalism than the bottom of the disc.

Who looks at the bottom of the disc unless the disc won't play right?

VHS? what is the agent casting the Blair Witch project.

Yes Canada it right just put dummy files on the DVD so that the burner burns all the way to the end.

But if the people who recieve these discs store them on a Harddrive they will notice the dummy files and wonder what is going on. they might think it's spyware or virii.

Best bet would be to explain all of this to your client in a very nice way. I think he is being silly. And I should know about being silly.

    These discs say Silver/Silver http://www.adorama.com/VDRIDP4X50B.html

Maybe there is silver bottom DVD R

  8. He's trying to find excuses for not being able to get a job.

Yeah I thought the same thing doppletwo - a VHS transfer and he's complaining about professionalism...

    Blair Witch, lol...

  9. I think they may judge the Actor by the size of the ring..Smaller the ring..Smaller the appearance/Job.

There are no small parts just small actors.

Did you check out that link I posted. I think silver/silver means the bottoms are silver.

But I can see on the "RING" on pressed DVD's and CD's that don't use the fully space on the disc.

  11. Thanks for all of your replies and suggestions. As far as the VHS goes, I had no choice since that was what he gave me. I did the best I could on the transfer and the disc itself, using photoglossy paper for the insert and label. You guys are right in that he seems like a typical actor who's just busting my b*lls. I'll try to explain to him again tomorrow in a rational manner and if he doesn't pay, I just won't give him his DVD nor the original tape!

Legally he might need to get the VHS Copy back. Not that it will ever work again.

If he doesn't pay, you take his tape as collateral.

This guy is a dumbass. Tell him to stick to acting, and leave the video editing to the video pros. In fact, you should try to give him some acting tips and see how he likes that. When he gets pissed off, your only comment should be "exactly!".

    Pretty cut and dry stuff.
