Can you make any assumptions on the burn of a dvd by looking at the dye on the disks? I have a few that exhibit diffrent shades of color in rings on the disc. The inside is apparently more saturated with dye and it diminishes in steps as you move outside. I am thinking this is due to different recording speeds, as seemingly no matter what I do I can't get a consistent writing rate throughout. Let me know your insights.

What brand and type of DVD media are you using? If you are not using good quality media, the dye may not be uniformly applied. You can also look to this site for DVD dye info: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/index.htm
Particularly look to the part about Z-CLV burning modes in 'Advanced Concepts....' and that might answer your question.
What I look for in the dye most times is blotches, unevenness, and odd gaps between the burned tracks. -
Verbatim 16x DVD+R. Two different burns of the same image will offer two different dye patterns.

Based on past forum posts, I suspect you may have hit on it with the first post. Say, if you burned at 16X, but the burner started at 4X and ramped up as the disc burned (i.e. burns faster the closer it gets to the outside), it may have produced the rings as described. Otherwise, there may be issues with the media - but I kinda doubt that if you're using Verbatims.
