I am making a trip to Ireland and would like to bring a few of my DVDs to watch while visiting family there. Will my DVDs play there? We use NTSC in the US and PAL is used in Ireland. Do most players play both?

Also think about the power supply, most countries are different from the US.

  5. If I read the question correctly? You are only planning to take the disks not a player too?

If so you need to ask them the make and model of their player and then research whether or not it can handle both.

2nd part don't take originals you cannot afford to lose. Region code will be gone if you backup with DVDDecrypter and/or shrink set to remove region coding.

3rd just in case I'd probably label the disks something like family re-union and family christmas 200x in case you run into a overly zealeous customs type. Or just do what we do and ship ahead via one of the global air freight companies. In my family we only do carry on luggage and pre-ship the rest both ways. Saves time at arrival since no waiting for luggage and in the case of customs should save time too. It just depends on what is more important to you, time and trouble saved or money saved. Plus with all the reports of things being stolen from luggage....

Why let some airport security type paw through your things? Why wait longer to check-in?

  6. I have noticed in Europe that many DVD players sold often say on the box that they will play PAL and NTSC discs. The players are usually cheap too (from euro 29 up). I know for a fact that many VCR's in Europe will actually playback NTSC videotapes on the European PAL tv's. I have seen this work...so I have to assume that the DVD players that list PAL and NTSC playback should work on the PAL tv (though I am offering no garantees). If you you have a little extra cash, your best bet is to buy a cheap DVD player in Ireland that has this feature and ask a knowledgeable store rep if they will reproduce the NTSC disc on a PAL tv unit.

    Good luck.

they will play pal or ntsc as long as they are region free.. Most dvd and tv plays ntsc.. unless they are region locked.
some very cheap dvd will indeed play the ntsc disk but will give a black and white picture.. that's the case for the playstation 2 per instance.
