  1. Hi, there!

I am not really sure, but what does this "Format free DVD-R (plays in both PAL and NTSC DVD players)" refer to? Quite a few DVD-R's with those characteristics are being sold online. Strangely, I can only see such when talking about DVD-R's (and sometimes DVD+R's) but not when talking about DVD's. Anyway, am I right to surmise it is one of these?:

    1) A double-layer or double-sided disc with the full video in both NTSC and PAL.
    2) Some form of NTSC or PAL manipulation using the pull method or alike.
    3) Some non-standard hybrid of NTSC and PAL.

If it is not 1, 2, or 3, what is it? Please be so kind to let me know by posting.

I think the supplier is simply confusing video formats with region-coding?

It can only be either 1 or 3. 2 simply doesn't exist. It may be that it is region free, however the curious thing is that these seem to be blanks. Blanks do not have a format. A blank DVD is neither PAL, nor NTSC, nor even a video disc. It is not until something it burned to it that it has a purpose that is narrower than simply "storage"

  4. Ntscuser,

What you are saying makes perfect sense, but the suppliers (or some of them) say that their DVD-R's are also region-free.

If you look on the Internet using my title as searching words, you will find quite some suppliers, most of them selling complete TV shows.

  5. Hello, Guns1inger!

I am trying to find out if this also refers to Pseudo PAL or Pseudo NTSC, but still, one is not completely compatible with the other, so the part "plays on both NTSC and PAL DVD players" doesn't apply.

As I was telling Ntscuser, the suppliers mainly deal with complete TV shows on DVD-R sets.

Let me see what else I can find out, and I will post back soon.

  6. Hi, again!

Apparently, there is no way to record "Pseudo NTSC" or "Pseudo PAL" on DVDR's, so I am still confused.

    P.S.: Just for the record:

    Hybrid Standard......Sub-Carrier......Scan Rate.......Lines....... Usage
    Pseudo PAL.............4.43MHz...........60Hz............ ..525..........For PAL TV
    Pseudo NTSC..........3.58MHz...........50Hz.............. 625..........For NTSC TV

Sorry to be blunt, but this person is just a moron. The end.

"the suppliers mainly deal with complete TV shows on DVD-R sets" is just another ******* bootlegger that knows nothing about what he's selling. Or worse, just lying. Most of those sellers online lie (not complete, not high quality, etc) or just outright steal your money (off-shore operations based in Asia, Russia or the old Eastern Bloc Europe). They are as far from an expert on video (or tv shows, for that matter) as can be.
