AVI must be same kind of file to "join".
Any file must be the same.
Must convert to MPEG anyway.
Suggest you encode separately, join MPEGs.
And then AUTHOR to get VOB.
Easy. Now read some GUIDES on this site if you need help with these processes. Good luck.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Use VirtualDub to join the AVIs, use direct stream mode and then TMPEnc to convert to MPG and finally an authoring package to get your VOBS

One thing that was left out and should be considered is this..
There are times when a set of AVI files will *not* match w/ another
one or more, when preparing to joing then. This sometimes happen.
It could be for any number of reasons. You can do as LS suggested
above, but I have another suggestion for you (and others) to consider.
.
If the AVI's are not lining up (joining) due to stream errors (or
any errors) you could try this instead, if you need to do other
steps to the AVI prior to Encoding..
Assuming vdub is the tool ...
For each AVI files Save as a NEW avi file, but to another format.
For example, save as Huffy, each avi file. By doing this, you
are in a way, "refreshing" the avi files. Yes, you are re-compressing,
but at least with huffy, it is at it's very minimum (if any) at all.
In the end, when you're ready to join all the avi files, you should
have no problems.
Don't do's ...
Don't save, by using Direct Stream Copy, because it will save the
old settings/formats of the avi file(s) you save
