I've got one called Edit Studio. I've had a play with it and although it doesn't do as much as I need, it's still pretty good and straightforward to use. The current version 4 isn't free, but I got a free, full function version 3 on a CD on the front of a PC magazine.

try VirtualdubMod, then - it will handle mpeg as well as .avi.

even if you go with another tool, download Virtualdub and keep it around - it's the Swiss Army Knife of video editing, I've found it's saved my bacon multiple times.

Both Zwei-Stein & Avisynth are good.

    Later!

There are many ways to measure success. You just have to find your own yardstick.

i second that avisynth, although u'll need the mpeg2dec3 plugin or something. idk what zweistein, so i can't comment onthat. mpeg aint' much of an editable format though (unless they're small, closed GOP), just a heads up. VirtualDubMod is nice graphical and free, but it only outputs RGB. What i like to do is look what i need to do in VDubMod, then transfer it to an AVISynth script. Sorta like a weird kind of AVISynth GUI/editor thing. it might be able to make avisynth scripts though, i'm not sure on that one.

No-one's said it yet, so I feel I should mention it - MPEG is what's considered an "end product" format, meaning that, after all the editing etc., that's the format that is used to deliver to the end user.

Therefore, MPEG isn't the best format to be doing your editing in. If you can, get yourself an AVI of the footage you want to edit, edit in AVI and then encode to MPEG.

If you can get AVI of your footage, all the links above referring to editors will be of use.

If you're stuck with MPEG, check out VideoReDo. Go there from the link on the homepage (near the bottom), that way the site gets a pay back I believe...

but it is not possible with the software mentioned to edit frames....e.g. to make an unwanted person intruding the video to disappear...
