My daughter's Panasonic still camera also captures video in .mov format. I need a free editor that will allow me to extract just a portion of the resulting .mov file, in other words to specify the start and stop times and create a new .mov file (or a file in some other popular format) that contains just that segment while maintaining the original quality. I've searched, Googled, and tried some programs till I'm blue in the face but haven't found anything that actually works. I would appreciate any suggestions. The program would have to run under Windows XP. TIA for the help.

AVIDemux or VirtualDub with a MOV plugin should work.

I heard that if your XP has service pack 3 then you can download Windows free Movie Maker. It might not be the best video editor.
