I burn all my movies as data discs in avi format on dvd-r's. my dvd player plays these videos just fine. but from time to time a file won't play properly. some won't play at all whilst others will cut out at the beginning, middle or end. and some videos that usually play normally will cut out part way through at random. i always try to do my own research before resorting to asking myself, but i've come up with nothing helpful. if anyone could help, it would be much appreciated.

Well, the obvious question is - could it be a marginal quality disk? Cheap (crap) media burned at full speed
is asking for trouble. If not the media, load the files back to the computer and use mediainfo
in view/text mode to compare a known good to a problematic file. For example, there are xvid options
known to cause problems with some players. eg Qpel, GMC, bvop (> 2) , etc, etc.
A third thing could be the actual size of the file. Some players will stop playing once it has read 1GB, some 2GB.
etc,etc. -
You could just reconvert the ones that doesn't work with avi recomp, it will create a avi that works on most divx dvd players.

I gathered that much from my own research. i'm not exactly computer smart when it comes to these types of programing. i'm learning as i go along. i'm the type of person who needs a little something more in depth. how would i go about finding the exact problem? and when i do find it, how do i fix it? some step-by-steps would be very helpful -
Take a file that is giving you problems. Burn two or three copies to the same DVD. Do the problems happen at the same place in all copies? Then it's a problem associated with the file, not the media.
If it's the files use MediaInfo to test for GMC and QPel. Many players don't support those, especially Xvid's 3 warp point GMC. Some players don't support more than 1 BVOP. Custom matrices and Packed Bitstream are a problem for some players. Many players can't play files larger than 720x480 or 720x576.
Code:Video ID : 0 Format : MPEG-4 Visual Format profile : Advanced Simple@L5 Format settings, BVOP : 1 Format settings, QPel : No Format settings, GMC : 3 warppoints Format settings, Matrix : Default (MPEG) Muxing mode : Packed bitstream Codec ID : XVID Codec ID/Hint : XviD Duration : 13s 96ms Bit rate : 1 370 Kbps Width : 720 pixels Height : 480 pixels Display aspect ratio : 3:2 Frame rate : 23.976 fps Standard : NTSC Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Compression mode : Lossy Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.165 Stream size : 2.14 MiB (87%) Writing library : XviD 64

I've already done that.all the files cut at the same place. i'm thinking that i need to shrink the files. i believe the files that won't play are larger than the one's that do. but i have no idea on how to shrink them. other time's i'm thinking that some of the movies need to be burned slower, but will that cause the files that don't need to be slower, run bady?

i downloaded Gspot to view all the details. i tried t find tutorials to help me understand, but like i said, i'm not smart when it comes to these types of programs, and the tutorials didn't make any sense to me. what do i do if i find a difference between the files? and what should i do if i don't?

There is a Divx Test CD with lots of Divx/Xvid test files:
https://www.videohelp.com/guides/test-cd-for-divx-players-v2-0-fully-new-version-id845#845
http://www.mpeg4-players.info/download/DivX.Test.CD.v2/DivXTestCDv2.0.by.bbdoc_forum.surdvd.com.iso
With it you can quickly determine determine which features cause problems for your player. -
thanks to all you guys, you helped a bunch... i still haven't figured out what any of the problems are, but i'm figuring out what isn't causing the problems. thank again
