  1. I have a Hauppauge PVR 150 MCE, and am capturing some old VHS tapes to MPEG with wintv, and am going to burn them to DVD.

When win TV captures the video there is some junk on the bottom of the video. From what I understand (and that is little) this is where the extra data is send (like subs and such). Since I'm just starting to do this, I am using the programs that I have and know (basically) how to use. I am capturing with winTV, since I have to go through the coax connector, and editing out stuff with TMPGENC MPEG editor. I'm using this since it allows me to cut sections from the capture with out having to reencode an already no so great quality video.

I would like to cut off the bottom of the video, but don't know how. If someone could help me with this, either with this program or something that is not to hard to use I would really appreciate it.

Also if someone knows of a better program to use to capture, or edit than I will be happy to try that.

Since I am converting from VHS to DVD, I'm trying to do as much as posasible with the smallest amount of passes over the video.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

    Bill

Don't worry about it. It falls in the overscan area and will not be visible when you play the DVD to your TV set.

  3. Thanks SmokieStover,

I assumed since I could see it on my PC that it would also show up on the tv.

Has anyone used TMPGENC DVD author, that would have any tips? I have not used it yet, but was going to try it after I get the vids capped.

    Thanks,
    Bill

If you do really want to get rid of it (as it does use some bitrate to encode) then the best method is to crop and add borders with a simple avisynth script, and encode from that. You have to be careful not to crop and resize, as this can royally screw interlaced footage.

I know what you are talking about. I did few VHS tapes this way.
I do not know if Mpeg editor has this. I use TMPGEnc Xpress for this.
You can crop there. Only thing is if you crop bottom you will have to crop side, otherwise the picture will get distorted.
Look at option filters in editor, you may find a crop filter there.
