To be brief: Yes and No
Most of your home made tapes will probably transfer without any problem.
Some of your tapes, however, may have technical issues that will need to be dealt with during the transfer. The fanatics (me included) use a Time Base Corrector to "clean up" certain portions of the video signal. Some people use a Proc Amp to adjust the Contrast, Brightness, Color, & Hue. But these devices can't always solve all issues. Furthermore, they can be costly to purchase.
In the end, it all depends upon the size of your wallet & your commitment to getting your project done.
I'm sure there will be other comments. So read everything carefully.

so basically if I just press play on my video and record on my dvd it might work

If everything is connected correctly, yes.
If it doesn't work, the machines might not be connected correctly. Make sure you have good cables, and the outputs from the VCR are connected to the inputs of the DVR. Next, make sure you have selected the correct input on your DVR. Then press play on the VCR & record on the DVR. In most cases this will be all you need to do. If it doesn't work, there is either a technical issue with the tape or with the equipment.
