    Hello,

I have the wintv pvr250 which is a slightly stripped down model of the 350 and I LOVE mine

It's an mpeg only hardware encoder. It can't get much easier. Just plug in the video and audio and walla - out comes a vcd/svcd/dvd compatible mpg file ready for authoring. It's very straight forward and works like a charm.

The 350 has an fm tuner, tv out, and dvd decoder chip on board (I think it's got the dvd decoder thingy that the 250 doesn't - but I know it has the fm tuner).

This quite simply is an OUTSTANDING card and you'll love it.

The 350 is the best card on the market. I also own a ATI 8600. If you compare you'll find that its the best. Do your own research on Googles. Never had a problem. Even the software is pretty good.

l too have the 250 and can highly recommend it.
I think only diff between 250 and 350 is that 350 has 2 tuners, right?

The 350 does not have 2 tuners (sorry).

But it does have FM radio input in addition to the video inputs.
Video inputs allow you to use the usual RCA phono jacks, or (preferred, if you have the same hookups on the other end) S-Video for better quality color signal.

I love mine, I can use the radio portion when not watching/recording video. Basically, while doing other things.

But if you have DISH/Directv (or other) you can't change channels by way of the Hauppage card - unless you get additional hardware/software.

jdrossiter your best option for Satellite like DishNetwork or DirecTV is you need buy an External IR Blaster like the USB-UIRT and you need 3rdparty PVR package like SageTV, BeyondTV or GB-PVR in order for it change channel other then that you have do it manuel on satellite reciever remote it self and just so you know the Retail WinTV-PVR 150 now has build-in IR Blaster and come with new 45 button Remote Control.
Now for PVR software your best beat is try SageTV, BeyondTV I don't know if GB-PVR can make use of PVR 150 IR Blaster you have to ask sub about that but other two can make use PVR 150 IR Blaster.

But if you after an FM tuner as well there always the WinTV-PVR 150MCE but it dosen't come with IR Blaster nor dose it come with Remote Control so againe you need to buy other part like USB-UIRT and any Universal IR Remote Control, some folks are just buying the cheap $15 Hauppage 45 button Remote Control which you can get off there web store.

  9. I think i can handle it with the satellite remote control, all the devices for that are right next to me so i just have to spin my seat around and flip the channel

  10. Not as high tech but what I do at the moment is use a Sony remote control that has macro capability. So when I need to record a cable channel that my TV card cannot tune into (needs to get the composite video feed from the cable box), I program my PVR app to record off the composite video input at the time and date I want and program my remote to turn the cable box to that channel at the time and date I want. Then just aim the control at the box.

A bit fiddly since 1) nobody better move the remote! and 2) have to remember to program the remote.

The Sony remote has 15 different timer macros so that's enough for my regular recording needs

    To JDROSSITER:

Yes, I have DirecTv as well..

In my case, I have an additional satellite receiver box in my computer room. The output from that box I have connected to the input of a vcr, with that output going to the Hauppage card.

Basically, my Hauppage card stays on channel 3 all the time, I change channels using just the DirecTv sat box. All this means to me is that I can't easily automate channel changing, and recording, by using the PVR software from Hauppage.

To fix that, if you want to, you need to get the software and hardware mentioned by the folks above.

But, in the DirecTv sat box, the remote control can set up a number of timers for changing to various channels - without having to purchase an additional special remote. So, it is possible to program the sat box to change to the channels at specified times, in advance, then also tell the PVR software to record from channel 3 - at those same times.

That is, if you don't want to spend any more cash.
For the time being, at least.
(And the vcr stays on channel 3, as well.)

  12. That is what I do. Always set the PVR to record the same channel at the times and dates you want and use my Sony remote to change the channel of the cable box (same as a satellite box) at the time and date when the show I want to record comes on

Remote cost about $40 from smarthome.com

I have that same remote from Sony.
It wasn't easy to setup, and I found that it sometimes makes mistakes in transmitting codes. (Maybe mine is a little flaky anyway.)
I got that remote when I thought the Directv sat box wouldn't/couldn't change channels automatically.

When I found that I could program the sat box directly with its remote, I gave up on the Sony because it wasn't foolproof. Other times someone would move it (dusting) or even I would forget about it and it would change when I didn't want it to.

Anyway, glad it works for you.

    Merry Christmas.

  14. Have yet to experience it sending the wrong codes but certainly I have forgotten to program it a few times I don't dust so can't comment about that Seriously I have the remote sitting in front of the cable box so it's not usually moved.

And since I record series usually it's easy to program the remote to switch the channel to the right cable channel weekly and then not worry about that setting. I keep a piece of paper next to the remote to remind me which of the 15 macros has been programmed to what channel.

Agree about the UI - pretty nonintuitive
