  1. Hi,

A while ago (and i'm talking bout 2 months) I recoded a divx source to mpeg2 using TMPGEnc. The source was animation and the latest DivX changelogs (since DivX 5.2) say they should improve quality even more for anime (no my source isnt pokemon or dball z or whatever commercial crap ). So I decided to recode my source to mpeg2 to benefit from these improvements, i needed to do this anyway because i wanted to make a proper DVD menu.

Anyway, to get to the point, I installed the *latest* TMPGEnc (the one released this year) and DivX 5.2.1 so i could recode the source to mpeg2.

Unfortunately however, i noticed artefacts appear almost every scene change! I couldnt remember getting those before, so i quickly installed the latest TMPGenc released in *2003*. It didn't help however, so now I'm wondering if it's DivX that is causing the problems?

However, i still have my source and when i watch it using Windows Media Player i can not see any artifacts, so it probably isnt DivX either...

    I'm using the exact same TMPGenc settings as before too;
    NTSC, 720x480, 4:3, 23,976 (internally 29) with 3:2 pulldown, 10bits, highest motion search, GOP: 1 5 0, and i tried CBR 9050 and 2PassVBR too.

I played around with a couple of them but they didnt make the artifacts dissapear

Does anyone know how this could be happening and how I could fix this?

Thanks, and sorry for making it so long, only i wanted to provide you with the necessary info

Sounds like your source contains artifacts, so unless you are able to filter them out then they will also be in whatever you convert to.

There are many possible reasons why.

Encode the file with VSO's DivXtoDVD and see if the artifacts remain.

    It's free. http://www.vso-software.fr/download.htm

It will tell you if the problem is with the source file, or with the encoder.

no my source is fine, because i dont see any artefacts while i watch it, only the mpeg2 version of the source has artefacts

thank you soupafresh, i will try it out right now...

  5. soupafresh, the program says the file is inaccessible or doesnt have a correct A/V
BUT it wasnt in the list of supported files so i had to select All Files before i could select my source to convert (its .ogm).

Ive been thinking, and i suddenly remembered one noticable difference between last time: im using Omega Radeon Drivers instead of the default catalyst ones, you think that might have something to do with it?

Ill try the catalysts to be on the safe side anyway

Btw, some more info about the artefacts:
    * they do not appear every scene change, only fast scene changes
    * they look like misplaced "blocks"

if anyone else has any input to this problem whatsoever, please do not hesitate to post !!

**UPDATE** The latest catalyst 4.12s didnt fix my problem , i still see small block artefacts when theres a fast scene switch (ie a lot of motion).

  6. Okay, problem "solved"

the first of the several files that my source had had these block artefacts already, i just didnt notice them... thanks for all your help tho

    and sorry to be bothersome
