despite burning several dvd's i have noticed it is now taking twice as long as it used to. I've checked my dma setting and for some reason(unknown)despite saying dma if available it is currently using PIO.

It used to use DMA but has changed on its own as daft as that sounds.

    Any help would be appreciated

Go into the device manager and uninstall the ide channel it is on and reboot.

When rebooted, windows will redetect the drive and it will be in dma mode.

After wrestling with the same problem (ide channel resets itself to using PIO instead of the requested DMA, and subsequent refusal to use anything but PIO), I searched this site, and after finding nothing of any help, I googled it and found that Windows resets itself to PIO after 6 device errors (which can be caused by a scratched or dirty DVD), and will no longer allow you to set it back to DMA.
To save space, it would be easier for you to just look at the web pages I found:

Did you not read what I said just above you?

I already said how to fix it.

Yes, Bazooka, I did read what you wrote.
If you would have read the links I posted, you would see that there are ways to prevent it from happening again, or at least the frequency of it happening. Plus I've found that understanding why something happens can be just as useful as a quick solution.
