  1. I just bought a Phillips DVP 642, and I am trying to play this XVID MPEG 4 file, but it's garbled and pixelated when played on the DVP 642 It is fine when played on my computer using Windows Media Player 9.

    Good advice needed.

    Could your problem be the well known pixelation problem with some xvid files?
    When the video plays press system/menu on the remote and then press it again. See if that makes it go away. If it works then it's a common problem which will return everytime you restart the video or sometimes when you fast forward. Just repeat the trick. As far as I know the cause is still unknown and has yet to be resolved with any firmware upgrade.

    Could be a problem with a custom quant matrix. You can check what matrix was used with MPEG4 Modifier. Will also report the XviD bitstream version, whether bframes, qpel or GMC are used, etc.

    Pardon the statement of the obvious, but:

    Is that a "known issue" with the DVP-642 ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

    My pleasure. I'm just passing on some info I picked up in another thread that helped me solve the same problem. All I did is make the connection with the problem you described.

    @Jim
    just to add to Heywould3's comment: It's come up in a number of threads here which drew quite a few comments so I guess it's common lnowledge with many dvp-642 owners and users at videohelp
